Abstract
An automatic winding machine of the kind in which a plurality of different yarns are available, utilizes bobbins that can be sensed as to the nature of the yarn to be wound on them. Prior to empty bobbin being in position for rewinding, it is subjected to a sensing operation to determine the nature of the yarn to be wound thereon and control means responsive to this operation then causes the appropriate yarn to be selected and wound on the bobbins. The invention is applicable to yarn winding machines associated with looms using yarns of different types. When a bobbin is ejected by the loom, any residual yarn is stripped off and when said bobbin is eventually returned to the winding station it will be wound with appropriate yarn in the above manner. In this way, the yarns to be wound are determined by the nature of the bobbin ejected by the loom and when the bobbins have been rewound they are sorted and stored, according to colour or other difference, as in Specification 1,022,494. In Figs. 7a to 7d the bobbins have recesses 120. The recesses may accommodate plugs 121. When the bobbin is about to be wound a probe responsive to the depth of a recess as varied by the presence of a plug, if any, initiates the selection of the appropriate yarn to be wound on the bobbin. Any other form of identification may be used. Operation of particular embodiment Prior to a bobbin B, Fig. 4, being in a rewinding position, its butt end having identifying indicia thereon is located in alignment with a probe 126. Cam means 28, 174, 166 will cause probe 126 to enter the recess 120 in the bobbin, there being lost motion means 150, 152 between the parts 166 and 126. Depending upon the depth of the recess 120, the shaft 144 will have rotated by a corresponding amount and this will determine the setting of a pool assembly 192. At the same time, a further cam means 30, 58 will have caused a ratchet member 180 to move temporarily away from the pawl assembly 192 the ratchet member 180 having a plurality of differently located notches 184 a-c. When the member 180 moves hack, under spring means 62, its setting is determined by the position of the pawl 192. The member 180 is rigidly coupled by a shaft 56 to a fan-shaped rocking carrier 42 having yarn guides 50a-d and clamp-shear units 52a-d each of which is operable to hold one of the yarn ends and to-sever said end on signal. An arm 54, Fig. 1 (not shown) is used to convey a yarn from the carrier 42 to the bobbin to be wound. The arm 54, as fully explained in Specification No. 1,070,652, moves in a stroke of predetermined path and length. In the course of said stroke the arm 54 is operable to receive and hold one of the supply yarns and to deliver it to bobbin B. The particlar supply yarn seized by the arm 54 is determined by the position of the carrier 42 as determined by the pawl 192 and ratchet 180. Cam means 26, 108 cause arms (88, 89), Fig. 6 (not shown) to move a bobbin from a magazine (86) to the probing position in Fig. 4, cause the bobbin to dwell at this position, and then cause the bobbin to move to the winding position. As each bobbin is wound it is dropped into an appropriate compartment of a reserve supply magazine (118) Fig. 1, the magazine and control means therefore being described in Specification 1.022.494.
