Abstract

Deposition, stagnation, reduction and fusion of catalyst in the upper part of a fluidised bed catalytic reactor is prevented by a horizontal plate with an aperture across the top part of the reactor and inert gas which is passed into the top of the reactor. The plate is fitted around the cyclones and associated pipe work to allow for thermal expansion. The apparatus may be used for oxidation of olefin/ammonia mixtures to form unsaturated nitriles, oxidation of olefines to aldehydes and acids, and oxidative dehydrogenation of butene-1 to butadiene.
