Abstract
An indirectly heated furnace for cracking hydrocarbons to make town or synthesis gas, comprises one or more groups of vertical tubes 24 in a chamber, each group being rigidly connected at its lower ends to a collecting pipe 11 located below the floor of the chamber, the pipe comprising the sole support for the group, and the pipe and the lower portion of the tubes up to about the upper level of the floor being internally thermally insulated at 27. The tubes are detachably connected to the pipe, e.g. through removable flanged distance pieces 13, and the lower (exit) end of the tubes may have tubular inserts 26, and outlets 28 for removal of catalyst from the tubes 24 after removal of the insulation 27 between the tubes 24, 26. The insulation 27 may comprise shaped superimposed members (see Fig. 3, not shown), or particulate material.
