Abstract
A process for the production 'of a razor blade comprises applying a coating of a fluorocarbon polymer to a cutting edge thereof and sintering the coating to adhere it to the edge, in which prior to, during, or after the sintering step the blade is heated at a temperature of at least 300 F in a reducing atmosphere containing from 2 x 1014 to 2 x 1015 molecules of oxygen per cubic centimeter. The polymer may be a homo-polymer of tetrafluoroethylene or a co-polymer of tetrafluoroethylene with small amounts e.g. up to 5% by weight, of hexafluoropropylene, especially those having a molecular weight of 5000 or more. The desired concentration of molecular oxygen can be provided by controlled addition of a small amount of molecular oxygen to a reducing gas or a mixture of such gases, such as hydrogen or cracked ammonia and using the mixture obtained at normal atmospheric pressure. Alternatively a gas such as water or carbon dioxide which decomposes at elevated temperature to form an equili- 'brium mixture containing molecular oxygen may be employed. A further method is by the use of the air at a reduced pressure.
