Abstract

The charging of a battery 10 by the alternator/ rectifier unit 9 of a vehicle is indicated by the extinguishing of a lamp 11 which is in series with the ignition switch 8 and a resistor 12 of positive temperature coefficient across the battery 10, the junction of members 11, 12 being connected to the phase point of the alternator through a diode 13. When the battery is not being charged the value of resistor 12 is such as to cause illumination of the lamp 11, but when the alternator is charging the battery the current through members 12, 13 is sufficient to heat the resistor 12, raise its resistance and so extinguish the lamp. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the diode 13 is omitted and resistor 12 is heated indirectly by a resistor (14) connected between the alternator phase point and earth.
