Abstract

Block copolymers are made by copolymerizing a mixture of propylene and ethylene containing 1À5 to 5 mol. per cent of the latter in an inert hydrocarbon medium in the presence of a catalyst capable of polymerizing propylene to a crystalline polymer, and then, without purging unreacted monomers from the system, continuing polymerization with a second feed which is ethylene or a mixture thereof with a lesser quantity of propylene than is present in the first feed, and recovering a product having an ethylene content of 4 to 20 mol. per cent. The alternation of feeds may take place more than once. The examples describe making block copolymers with the use of catalysts consisting of aluminium diethyl chloride, titanium trichloride and diethylene glycol dimethyl ether.Block copolymers are made by copolymerizing a mixture of propylene and ethylene containing 1.5 to 5 mol. per cent of the latter in an inert hydrocarbon medium in the presence of a catalyst capable of polymerizing propylene to a crystalline polymer, and then, without purging unreacted monomers from the system, continuing polymerization with a second feed which is ethylene or a mixture thereof with a lesser quantity of propylene than is present in the first feed, and recovering a product having an ethylene content of 4 to 20 mol. per cent.
