Abstract

Olefin sulphonates are prepared from olefins (e.g. C 10-22 ) which have been purified by treatment with sulphuric acid under conditions such that olefin sulphation and isomerization do not take place, followed by phase separation and treatment of the olefin layer with an absorbent (see Division C5). Sulphonation may be effected using an SO 3 /air mixture in a falling film reactor, a stirred tank reactor, or by atomizing the olefin in the SO 3 /air stream. The sulphonated products may be bleached with an aqueous sodium hypochlorite solution. They are useful in detergent compositions.
