Abstract
In a pneumatic feeding arrangement for conveying fibrous material to a plurality of carding machines C1-C6, each carding machine has a tapering, closed topped, chute 11 with means 20, 21 at the bottom of the chute for delivering the fibrous material in sheet form to the card, a trapezium shaped opening in one side wall of the chute being releasably connected to a supply duct 29 and a smaller trapezium shaped opening in the opposite side wall being releasably connected to an outlet duct 30. Fibrous material fed in an airstream through duct 29 has its flow cross section abruptly increased as the flow enters the upper part of chute 11 provided that the level of fibres in the chute is below the bottom of the inlet opening, the resulting reduction in fibre flow velocity being sufficient to allow fibres to be deposited in the chute. Fibres collecting in chute 11 are compacted by the action of an oscillating wall 15 which swings about pivot 16. Sealing strips 49, 50 at the lower ends of the chute walls prevent air loss. A lever arrangement 41-47 allows for the adjustment of the spacing between the wall 12 of the chute and the nip between the roller 20 and the feed plate 21. Angled strips 33, 34, 35 surround the openings and ducts 29 and 30 are secured to the chute 11 by sliding flanges on the ends of the ducts behind the strips. An insert plate may be interposed between the end of a duct and the side walls to reduce the size of the opening and thus alter the flow rate. A wall of the chute may be transparent.
