Abstract
930,930. Preparing fibre for spinning; coiling sliver. JOH. JACOB RIETER & CIE A.G. Sept. 17, 1959 [Sept. 19, 1958; June 1, 1959], No. 31743/59. Classes 120 (1) and 120 (3). [Also in Group XXXV] In an automatic carding plant comprising, for example, two rows of carders, a hopper feeder 2, Fig. 1, receives fibrous material from an opener (not shown) through a supply conduit 1 and fine tufts of the material formed by a beater 3 are drawn by a blower 5 through a conduit 4 and transported in a gaseous e.g. compressed air, medium through an adapter 7 into a single circulating duct 6 of rectangular crosssection the width of which is the same as that of the cards 9 which are individually supplied with tufts through depositing ducts 8. Immediately upstream and downstream of ducts 8, the flow area of duct 6 increases and decreases. As shown in Fig. 3, the flow area downstream of duct 8 is varied by a hinged flowdiverting flap 39 which may seal the duct. The upstream flow area is varied by sliding a sheet 23, attached to a flange 24 pivoted to a plate 26, within a slot 22. Tufts accumulated in ducts 8 are discharged by closure-forming rollers 15 and 151, surfaced with abrasive and elastically deformable materials respectively, Fig. 7 (not shown), and the roller 15 being positively driven at adjustable speed, and are fed thereby, in slightly compressed condition, to takers-in 16. Manually adjustable slides provide clearance between ducts 8 and rollers 15, 15<SP>1</SP>, and permit escape of gaseous medium only: in addition, the position of the lower end portion of wall 23 is manually adjustable relative to wall 29, Figs. 4-6 (not shown). Downstream of the last card 9, the weight of returned tufts (approximately 10%) is measured by a device 11 amplified signals from which actuate electrically controlled regulation of the delivery of material to hopper 2. The plant may also comprise apparatus e.g. an endless conveyer 66 continuously delivering the card slivers e.g. to a drawing frame 98 the drafted material being deposited in cans 99. Sliver accumulating apparatus may be provided between each carder and the conveyer or be interposed between continuously operating machines respectively producing and receiving sliver, so that a carder may be stopped without interrupting sliver delivery and the latter rendered uniform. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 8 (which may be positioned at the outlet of each carder 9) sliver is fed and coiled by rollers 60 and a coiler wheel 61, the coils are supported on a rod 62 and slide thereon to an uncoiling wheel 63 coacting with delivery rollers 64 to feed continuously the sliver around roller 65, under guide rollers 73 to conveyer 66. The units of-the apparatus are synchronously driven from the carder. A modification, Fig. 10, comprises a conventional coiler supplying an accumulating rod 74 which is oscillated in the axial direction, by a solenoid actuated vibrator 78 acting on a plate spring 76, in order to shift the sliver coils towards the delivery end where they are removed by rollers 80. A switch 82 comprising a piston rod 81 mounting a roller 75 engageable with one end of rod 74 forms part of a control circuit (not shown) which prevents overloading of the rod or complete removable of sliver there from. In another modification, Fig. 12, sliver supplied to the fork of a swinging element 84 is deposited on, with alternate loops of sliver draped on opposite sides of, a rod 85 which is mechanically agitated, Fig. 11 (not shown), to shift the sliver towards the delivery end thereof.
