Abstract

Spark ignition apparatus for an internalcombustion engine comprises a spark generating circuit for supplying spark-generating pulses to the plugs of the engine in turn, a trigger circuit coupled to the spark generating circuit and serving when biased by an input to permit the spark generating circuit to produce a spark producing pulse, a fixed frequency oscillator for providing the biasing input to the trigger circuit, the oscillator running continuously in use, and magnetic means driven by the engine for coupling the oscillator to the trigger circuit when a spark is required, the design of the trigger circuit being such that irrespective of engine speed only one spark is produced each time the oscillator is coupled to the trigger circuit. The oscillator may be coupled to the trigger circuit when required by way of a pick up winding 44 which is tuned to the frequency of the oscillators. The spark generating circuit includes a transistor 4 in series with-the primary winding 39 of an ignition coil 37, the transistor being turned off to produce a spark. A voltage dependent resistor 42 is connected across the collector emitter of the transistor for protection against back e. m. f. The transistor and resistor may be housed in the distributor which acts as a heat sink for the transistor. The oscillator and trigger circuit may also be housed in the distributor.
