Abstract

A method of manufacturing an oxide-coated cathode for use in a cathode ray tube in which a carbonate layer provided on a cathode support and originally of excessive thickness is reduced to the correct thickness by mechanical means (knife 7 in Fig.1, not shown) or by pressing until the quotient of layer thickness and dielectric constant, as determined by a circuit arranged to measure the capacitance between the support and a measuring electrode adjacent the free surface of the layer, is constant. The planing apparatus of Fig.1 (not shown) including the support (1), the measuring electrode (8) and the layer (2), may be included in a bridge circuit, a servomechanism being connected between the bridge circuit and planing drive for automatic control. The planing movements may be reduced to two by noting the layer thickness to dielectric constant ratio after the first action, The operative diameter of the measuring electrode is preferably the same as that of the aperture in the first control electrode of an electron gun into which the cathode is to be incorporated. Cathodes of rectangular cross-section are instanced.
