Abstract
Apparatus for viewing or photographing the inside of a closed chamber 1 through a window 3 comprises a first lens system, the front lens 9 of which has a planar front face 10 and an ellipsoidal or paraboloidal rear face 11, a diaphragm 12 in the rear pupil plane 13 of the first lens system and, immediately in front of the diaphragm a lighting system 14 directed towards the window 3 via the lens 9 together with second and third lens systems 15, 23 for relaying an image of the inside of the chamber to an observer, photographic plate or television transmitter, reflections of the lighting system 14 at the surfaces of the lens 9 being stopped by a system of masks 21, 22 located between the lens systems 15, 23. The lighting system 14 may be an annular flash-tube. The masks 21, 22 are formed by placing two photographic plates in the optical system and exposing the plates by operating the flash. As shown the window 3 is a meniscus defined by two partspherical concentric surfaces. The near focus of the rear face 11 of the lens 9 coincides with the common centre of the window surfaces. The diaphragm 12 is positioned at the second focus of an ellipsoidal face 11 or at a relatively great distance from the lens 9 when the face 11 is paraboloidal.
