A process for the synthesis of isoindoline derivatives, characterized in that it comprises treating a diester of the formula: ** (See formula) ** wherein one or more of the hydrogen atoms of the rings A1 and A2 can be substituted by a halogen atom, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, hydroxyl, sulfonyl, sulfinyl, sulfamyl, lower alkylmercapto, mono-lower alkylamino, di- lower alkylamino, acylamino or trifluoromethyl; R represents hydrogen or lower alkyl; and X is halogen or a mesyl or tosyl group or similar group, with an alkylene diamine of the formula h2N-B-nh2 wherein the symbol B represents a straight or branched chain alkylene group, containing from 2 to 12 carbon atoms in the chain, and the alkylene groups in which part of the carbon atoms, or all of them, are in form of a carbocycle of 3 to 7 carbon atoms, and, if desired, transform the product obtained into an acid addition salt.
