Abstract
A process for the recovery of aluminum from an aluminum-containing metal in which a granular metal containing aluminum in a reaction zone at a temperature exceeding 1,000º C is contacted with a gaseous aluminum trihalide stream to generate aluminum monohalide, the stream of gas containing aluminum monohalide being subsequently cooled in a condensation zone at a temperature above the melting point of aluminum, so as to carry out the decomposition of the aluminum monohalide and the deposition of liquid metallic aluminum, characterized in that at least a part of the exhausted gas stream coming from the condensation zone, passes through a fresh charge of aluminum-containing metal and comes into contact with it, on the way to the reaction zone, in a contact area so as to preheat said metal before it enters the reaction zone and cool the gas stream to a tempera less than the melting point of aluminum.
