Abstract
A cavity resonator is compensated for changes in resonant frequency due to temperature variations by means of an independent piston supported upon members which are deformable under the influence of the temperature variations. As shown, a cavity 601 of the re-entrant type (part only shown) is tuned by axial movement of the re-entrant portion 602 which, for this purpose, is threaded into a radially compressible collar 609 carrying an internally bevelled lock-nut 616. A coaxial temperature-compensating piston 604 is carried upon a rod 607 screw-threaded into a guiding member 606 which slides axially within the tuning piston 602. The axial position of member 606, and hence of the piston 604, is determined by the length of three tubular temperature-responsive liquid-filled bellows 610 (two only shown) against which the member 606 is pressed by a spring 614. The end of the rod 607 is located by a flexible blade 671. Guiding member 606 is positively connected to the piston 602 by the bellows 610 so that rotation of the piston causes rotation of member 606 and axial movement of rod 607. Hence, the penetration of the piston 604 #e varies with the penetration a of the tuning piston 602. The resulting variation in compensation sensitivity with resonant frequency can be made to follow a given linear or other law by suitably choosing the pitches of screw threads 661, 631. In a modification, the bellows are replaced by stacks of arcuate bi-metallic elements (512, Fig. 5). In another embodiment the two pistons are manually and independently adjustable.
