Abstract

A direct action fuze for non-rotating projectiles provided with safety means and a spring-actuated rocker 37 to control arming comprises a locking device 17 which prevents movement of the rocker 37 before launching of the projectile and also prevents movement of a striker bolt, the device 17 being arranged to slide longitudinally in the body of the fuze. On the fuze body 1 is a cover 2, which can be rotated to set the fuze for instantaneous or delayed action on impact. On assembly of the cover and body, a screw 8 is tightened to force apart the ends of an elastic ring 5 so that the ring engages a seating 7 in the cover and prevents separation. A seal 4 is provided between the body and the cover and a cap 3 having a crushable part 49 is secured on cover 2. In the safety position, instantaneous and delay primers 30, 31 housed in a rotatable carrier 11 are out of alignment with the striker 9 and a pyrotechnic train leading to a detonator 54. When cover 2 is rotated to set the fuze, a depending finger 28 rotates the carrier 11 until the selected primer is in line with striker 9. This rotation brings a recess in the cover into register with balls 14, 15. On launching the projectile, the balls 14, 15 move outwards and release the member 17, which sets back due to inertia against its support spring 21. A leaf spring prevents return movement of the member 17. Movement of the bolt 10 is prevented by a ball 24 supported by a rod 27 bearing against a spring-stressed rack 12 housing a primer (41), Fig. 9 (not shown). Rearward movement of the member 17 brings a recess into line with rocker 37, which is connected through a clockwork gear train to the rack 12. With the rocker 37 freed, spring 39 drives the rack 12 transversely of the fuze until primer (41) is aligned with a flash passage 38. As the rack moves from under rod 27, the bolt 10 is freed and a torsion spring (not shown) rotates the bolt and so frees the striker. The fuze can then operate on impact either by the striker 9 being driven inwards, or if the blow is a glancing one by momentum of the carrier 11. To test the fuze, the carrier 11 may be replaced by one containing inert material. After testing the rack 12 may be returned to its initial position by inserting a rod through an opening 51 normally closed by a plug. The movement of the gear train is reversible.
