Abstract

In the wine press of Fig. 1 in which hydraulic means are provided for operating the press plate 5a, a threaded collar 2 serves to raise and lower the entire hydraulic unit on the threaded rod 1. In the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2 a pair of hydraulic cylinders 4 are mounted on a base plate 5 to which the press plate 5a is attached and which has at the centre a hole in which a tube 6 is welded through which the rod 1 freely passes. Pistons 3 operating in cylinders 4 are secured to the collar 2. A pump 13 pumps hydraulic fluid from a reservoir 14 formed by a metal sheet 7 surrounding the cylinders via a bypass valve 15 and tube 10 into one of the cylinders and thence to the other by interconnecting tube 9. The plate 5 is thus lowered and simultaneously springs 11 within each of the cylinders are compressed so that an operation of bypass valve 15 to place tube 10 in direct connection with reservoir 14, said springs will return the unit to the starting position. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown) a single central spring is used instead of springs within the cylinders in Fig. 5 (not shown) the return action is obtained by use of double acting pistons instead of springs and in Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) a single piston surrounding the rod 1 is used, with hydraulic and spring return respectively.
