Abstract

A method of electroplating ferromagnetic articles comprises inducing a moving magnetic field in a tank containing electrolyte such that articles therein are positioned on the inner surface of the tank, the inner surface of the tank being at least partially electrically conductive and preferably substantially non-ferromagnetic, and being connected to a source of electrical current. The tank may be cylindrical, and the magnetic field may be a rotating magnetic field, e.g. formed by means of a multiphase, multicoil electrical circuit. The embodiment shown, comprises a cylindrical tank 1, the inner surface 7 thereof forming the cathode a centrally positioned anode 5 and surrounding the tank, three pairs of coils 17', 17" 23', 23" 29', 29" connected to sources of alternating voltage 19, 25, 31 respectively, having a difference of 120 in phase from one another, thus forming a rotating magnetic field. Articles 40, within the tank will, when the magnetic field is switched on, move towards the tank wall and be raised to a position where the magnetic field is a maximum, thereby making electrical contact with the wall, and then slowly roll around the tank whilst maintaining contact with the tank wall. The tank has a perforated base and is placed within a larger tank 15 containing electrolyte which is circulated between the two tanks by means of pump 13.<PICT:1051702/C6-C7/1> A method of electroplating ferromagnetic articles comprises inducing a moving magnetic field in a tank containing electrolyte such that articles therein are positioned on the inner surface of the tank, the inner surface of the tank being at least partially electrically conductive and preferably substantially non-ferromagnetic, and being connected to a source of electrical current.
