Abstract

A fuel element comprises a plurality of identical canned fuel plates arranged parallel with a common axis in a regular latticework array, the plates having a width to thickness ratio of between 3 and 5 and being rigidly connected to one another by connecting sections. In the preferred embodiments described, the connecting sections extend over the entire length of the plates with their ends embedded in the edges of the plates, and the latticework array is triangular with twelve fuel plates, six of which form the six sides of a regular hexagon and the remainder of which join the centre of this hexagon to its vertices. In one embodiment the fuel plates have a cross-section formed by two parallel plane sides joined by two cylindrical end portions, while in another they have a cross-section having the form in profile of a bi-convex lens. The connecting sections may join the fuel plates to an outer annular jacket, the axis of which coincides with the common axis of the fuel plates. Alternatively, the connecting sections may join the fuel plates to shoes bearing on the inner wall of a duct.
