Abstract
A continuous casting machine comprises an annular mould member 2 carried on an annular support member 28, the mould and support member being supported in a horizontal or inclined plane on frusto-conical rollers 52, and the mould being rotatably driven by a drive roller 60 located inside and in frictional contact with the support member, co-operating with a spring loaded support roller 66 engaging the outside surface of the support member. The mould 2 is formed with a head portion which contains a casting groove 4 and an integral downwardly depending flange portion 26, which is supported on shims 30 on the support member 28. Side members 38, and 40 are attached to the member 28 so as to form an annular channel on the support 28 into which the flange 26 of the mould 2 extends. Cooling liquid is circulated in the channel and means are provided for controlling the level of the coolant and so control the solidification of the casting in the groove 4. Positions around the casting groove annulars are predetermined for the supply of molten metal to and the removal of the continuous casting from the groove 4 respectively. The mould groove may be lubricated by spray means 22 with colloidal graphite to facilitate the easy removal of the casting. Prior to casting, the inner surfaces of the groove 4 are coated with a layer of heatinsulating and refractory substance such as any of various silicates, Aluminates or Bentonite which prevents over heating of the mould and over cooling of the casting. It may be desirable for the casting to solidify in controlled atmospheric conditions, in which case, an annular hood 48 of inverted channel section may be suspended from a supporting structure 49 the sides of the channel projecting into the coolant trough thereby forming an annular gas-tight tunnel enclosing the mould member 2. A stationary wedge member 16 located in the casting groove 4 facilitates the removal of the solidified casting which is carried immediately to a hot rolling stand 20. The tundish 12 from which the molten metal is poured into the casting groove 4 may be movably mounted, Fig. 8 (not shown), and adapted by means of a roller follower 90 to always remain in the same position relative to the groove 4 irrespective of the changes in dimension of the annular mould due to expansion and contraction, Fig. 5 (not shown).
