Abstract
Filaments of acrylonitrile polymer are stretched in an anhydrous bath consisting of at least one molten inorganic water-soluble salt at a temperature between 140 and 200 C., preferably between 150 and 170 C. The term " acrylonitrile polymer " is defined to include polyacrylonitrile as homopolymer or copolymer (for example block or graft copolymer) or mixtures thereof which contain at least 85 weight per cent of polyacrylonitrile and up to 15 weight per cent of one or more polymerized and compatible ethylenically unsaturated monomers the term " filaments " is defined to include monofilaments, fibres and tow obtained by wet or dry spinning. The bath preferably consists of a mixture of salts having a melting point not higher than 160 C. and may consist of binary and ternary mixtures of alkali metal nitrates and/or nitrites, for example binary mixtures of KNO 3 -NaNO 2 , KNO 2 -NaNO 3 and KNO 3 -LiNO 3 , and ternary mixtures of KNO 3 -NaNO 3 -NaNO 2 and If desired, the stretching may be repeated one or more times at the same or at different temperatures. Filaments of low denier, for example of denier, may be obtained. Examples describe the stretching of tows obtained by wet spinning a solution of a copolymer of 93 weight per cent of acrylonitrile and 7 weight per cent of vinyl acetate in dimethylacetamide, the molten salt bath consisting of a binary mixture of KNO 3 and NaNO 2 in a weight ratio of 60: 40 (Example 1) a binary mixture of KNO 2 and NaNO 3 in a weight ratio of 50: 50 (Example 2) and a ternary mixture of KNO 3 , NaNO 3 and NaNO 2 in a weight ratio of 57: 3: 40 (Example 3).
