Abstract
Doffing and donning apparatus for a ring- spinning machine comprises a carriage, Fig. 1, with two sets of forks each set extending radially from a shaft the first set 1 is for doffing and engage the bobbins in turn to first loosen them and then to remove them from the spindles, while the second set 3 is for donning and comprises U-members with a fork on each of the two parallel limbs, the lower forks engaging doffed spindles in turn while the corresponding upper fork takes up empty bobbins from a hopper 4 to drop them on to the empty spindles, levers actuated by the spindles being provided to impale the bobbins so donned. The doffing forks 2, Fig. 2, are arranged on a shaft which is rotated as successive forks engage the spindles as the carriage moves. Each fork is mounted by a ball joint allowing the fork a limited vertical movement. When one of the forks engages a filled bobbin, as the carriage moves it rides over an inclined surface 12 and rises to loosen the bobbin from the spindle. When the preceding fork is engaged with a spindle, as the carriage moves, it causes one arm 15, Fig. 3, of a two-armed lever to rock downwardly against the action of a spring 14. When the fork leaves its spindle, the spring is freed to raise the lever so that it strikes beneath the fork that has just loosened the bobbin and forces the 'bobbin against a plate 5 which deflects it onto an inclined surface 6 to be guided into a box 7. The donning forks. These comprise a series of U-members carrying forks 8, 8a and mounted in plates 18, 19 fixed to a shaft 22, Fig. 4. Each fork can slide in an aperture 20 in the upper plate and a guide 17 in the lower plate, the bottom fork being urged outwardly by a spring 21. The hopper 4 is replaceable and is closed by a sliding plate which is withdrawn when the hopper is in position, so that empty bobbins fall on a conveyer 27, to be transported to a vertical duct 29 in which they lie horizontally. At the inlet of the duct, one end of the bobbin is struck by a blade 31, Fig. 5, rotated by the shaft 22 of the donning-set. It thus hits against a pin 34 and is turned to the vertical and slides by gravity into a channel 30. As one of the lower forks engages an empty spindle, with movement of the carriage, the shaft 22 is rotated so that the corresponding upper fork 8 carries the foremost bobbin along a channel 36, finally displacing a spring plate 40 to release the bobbin so that it falls on to the spindle. During the movement of the carriage, one of a number of U-sectioned levers (41, Fig. 6, not shown) associated with the donning- mechanism, is acted upon by one of the spindles to displace one arm of a spring-urged bell crank, so that the other arm is stressed to deliver an impaling-blow to the donned bobbin when the first arm is released.
