Abstract
A control element for operation in a vertical channel 12 in the core 13 of a nuclear reactor comprises a series of articulated plates 16a, 16b, 16c ... 16x, 16y, 16z of neutron absorbing material each linked edgewise to its neighbour or neighbours by pivot means allowing the plates individually to rotate between a position in which they are stacked one beside another and one in which they extend edge to edge in a vertical line, a flexible wire cable 23 passing from end to end of the series for controlling such rotation. The plates 16a, 16b, 16c ... 16x, 16y, 16z are, in the embodiment described, linked to one another by hinge pins 17a, 17b . . . 17x, 17y, the uppermost plate 16a being attached by a hinge pin 18 to the base of a shield " plug 14 situated at the upper end of a standpipe 11 leading from the channel 12 while the lowermost plate 16z is attached to a bob weight 21 by a hinge pin 22. The cable 23 is bedded in the bob weight 21 and passes up through the plates 16 by way of slots 27a, 27b, 27c ... 27x, 27y and through the shield plug 14 to a motordriven reel (not shown). The angular position of the plates 16 relative to one another and hence the neutron absorption capacity of the control element depends on the extent of the cable 23 beneath the shield plug 14.
