Abstract

A crank-shaft 5 reciprocating pistons 1 in bores 2 of a refrigerator compressor is provided with oil free, self-lubricating, main and big-end bearings 22, 23 and 21 supplied with cooling medium, e.g. liquid refrigerant or water through pipes 43, 49. The cooling medium flows through grooves 44 and channels 45, 46 in the crankshaft into pipes 48 connected to the small-end bearing bushes 20. The bearings 20-23 and the linings of the bores 2 are of sintered bronze, or ferrous material impregnated with PTFE or graphite. Each piston 1 has a sleeve 15 held in position by a spring ring 17 and made of nylon impregnated with molybdenum disulphide or of glass fibres impregnated with PTFE. The piston rings 18 are of graphite or PTFE reinforced with glass fibres. A gland surrounds one end of the crank-shaft and comprises a steel ring 33 secured to the crankshaft, a synthetic rubber ring 32, a stationary housing 35 and a copper bellows 38 cooled by liquid refrigerant supplied through a pipe 41 and removed through a pipe 42.
