Abstract

A device for coiling a tress of hair about the axis of a tubular winding member, for hair setting and permanent waving, comprises a guide member 16, 18 connectible to a source of suction, and a perforated tubular winding member having a side wall 10 and base 12, the guide member having projections 22 to removably mount the winding member in the air stream so that the air stream passes through its perforations and a hair tress, entrained in the stream, is fed to the winding member by movement of the guide member longitudinally of the tress, the device including a projection 23 supported by the projections 22 and passing through an aperture 11 in the base 12 to control the direction of lay of the individual helical coils of the tress. The telescoping parts 16, 18 of the guide member are preferably transparent and are adjusted so that the mouth of the winding member is coincident with a flange 20 on the part 18, the device being brought close to wetted or dry hair with a circular motion and the correct amount of hair automatically selected. Permanent waving lotions may be applied to the hair before coiling or through the winding member which remains secured to the tress by a clip 26 after suction has been cut off and the guide member removed. The rigid or resilient winding member is formed in one piece, e.g. of plastics, ceramics or rubber, or by inter-weaving monofiliaments of staple fibre yarns, corrosion-resistant metal wire, or from sheets of unwoven bonded material. In modifications the base is not apertured, the size of the perforations in the side walls varies, the member is rectangular or triangular in cross-section or is waisted and the projection controlling the lay of the coils is a hollow apertured shaft integral with the base of the winding member. In a further modification an entrained tress of hair is wound in overlapping coils on the apertured wall of a shaft which is rotatably mounted within a stationary guide member, the entering air stream being directed in a circular path to guide the tress and rotate the shaft and an independent drive for the shaft, in the form of a separate air stream or an electric motor, being provided. A modification for spiral winding on a rotated shaft has a closure member with an off-centre hairreceiving aperture, and, in further modifications, the guide member is within, and rotates, a waisted winding member on which the hair is wound in overlapping coils, or the lay of the hair in spiral coils against the inner wall of a winding member is controlled by controlling the direction of air entering or leaving the winding member by a pivoted mouth closure or by slanted slots in the wall of the guide member.
