Abstract
A process for chlorinating polyvinyl chloride and copolymers of at least 70 weight per cent of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, comprises passing chlorine gas into an aqueous dispersion of the vinyl chloride polymer containing an organic peroxide and a substantially water-immiscible organic solvent for said peroxide. Specified peroxides are lauroyl and benzoyl peroxides. Specified solvents are carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and tetrachlorethane. The peroxide may be added continuously or intermittently throughout the process, and the polymer dispersion is preferably prechlorinated for ten minutes in the presence of the solvent before addition of peroxide. Surface active agents, e.g. sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, and sodium, potassium and calcium chlorides and hydrochloric acid may also be present. The process is preferably effected in the absence of molecular oxygen.
