Abstract

Process for the treatment of pulp of wood felted in wet, characterized in that it contains appreciable amounts of woody and non-cellulosic materials and has a consistency of not less than 25% solids, and to understand the steps of impregnating the pulp wet felted with an alkaline peroxide solution as the only chemical addition to perform self-controlled pulp bleaching; said alkaline peroxide solution has a ph of 9.5 to 11 and a total alkalinity of 0.35 to 1.1% by weight of sodium oxide equivalent, based on completely dry pulp and comprises a peroxide and a salt alkaline containing as an essential ingredient a sodium salt chosen from the group consisting of sodium silicate, trisodium phosphate, sodium pyrophosphate and sodium tetraphosphate, to accumulate the festered and impregnated pulp, in a mass of appreciable volume and having a relatively small exposed surface, for avoid drying the mentioned mass; to allow said mass to remain in the wet felted condition for from 5 hours to several weeks, in the course of the initial period, time in which the maximum brightness of the pulp is achieved, and the ph thereof is automatically reduced to at least, at the point of maximum brightness, and omitting any further chemical addition to the bleached pulp, to inhibit the color reversion therein after obtaining said maximum brightness; bleached pulp retains virtually its maximum brightness for a period of several weeks at least.
