Abstract
The invention comprises azo dyes which are free from groups imparting solubility in water of the general formula <FORM:0945236/C3/1> in which R represents an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl or cyanalkyl group having at most 6 carbon atoms and R1 represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy group or aliphatic acylamino group derived from a carboxylic acid and a process for the manufacture of azo dyes which are free from groups imparting solubility in water wherein diazotized 2-amino-5-nitrothiazole is coupled with an N : N-dialkylaniline which is capable of coupling in para-position to the amino group and in which one of the two alkyl groups contains a carboxylic acid amide group. Among specific compounds described values for R are methyl, ethyl and butyl and for R1 are hydrogen, methoxy, acetyl and butyrylamino. Examples are furnished in which the diazotization is carried in concentrated sulphuric acid solution with sodium nitrite and the coupling is carried out in glacial acetic acid. The dyes are employed for dyeing or printing hydropholic fibres, e.g. of polyamides, cellulose 2 1/2 - and triacetate and polyethylene terephthalate.
