Abstract
<PICT:0985784/C1/1> Sulphur dioxide is produced continuously by introducing sulphur and SO3 into an agitated pool of molten sulphur and H2SO4 of 100% to 101% acidity maintained at from 120 DEG C. to 150 DEG C., the S and SO3 being introduced at rates to maintain the ratio of H2SO4 to S between 30: 1 and 2: 1, and the SO3 being introduced below the surface of the agitated pool. The pressure in the reactor may be varied but atmospheric pressure is preferred. Liquid or gaseous SO3 may be used and liquid or solid S may be added. In the Figure a glass lined steel reaction vessel 14 cooled by water jacket 1 having an agitator 2 driven by motor 3 contains a mixture 13 of H2SO4 and molten S. H2SO4 is added through inlet 4 prior to the start of the reaction. S enters through a steam jacket 5 and is controlled automatically by liquid level sensing element 8. SO3 enters through sparge pipe 6. The SO2 leaves through outlet 9, and is scrubbed with 98% H2SO4 to SO3.
