Abstract
Un sistema de comunicación que comprende: una red (2) que comprende una pluralidad de primeros puntos de acceso (6, 8), estando configurado cada punto de acceso para comunicación bi-direccional, usando un primer protocolo de radio, con un dispositivo de comunicación que se ha asociado con el punto de acceso mediante un intercambio de datos de asociación, en el que cada punto de acceso está configurado adicionalmente para recibir, a una primera velocidad de datos usando el primer protocolo de radio, un mensaje de radio de multidifusión desde una unidad de comunicación inalámbrica que no está asociada con el punto de acceso y reenviar el mensaje de multidifusión en la red; y una unidad de comunicación inalámbrica (12) que comprende medios de transmisión de radio configurados para transmitir un mensaje de radio de multidifusión a la primera velocidad de datos usando el primer protocolo de radio; caracterizado por que: el sistema de comunicación comprende adicionalmente un transmisor de radio (10) configurado para enviar datos que comprenden un mensaje de control, direccionados a una o más unidades de comunicación inalámbricas específicas, a una segunda velocidad de datos, usando un segundo protocolo de radio diferente del primer protocolo de radio; y la unidad de comunicación inalámbrica (12) comprende medios de recepción de radio configurados para recibir y decodificar un mensaje de control desde el transmisor de radio (10), recibido a la segunda velocidad de datos usando el segundo protocolo de radio, y está configurada para ejecutar una función en respuesta a recibir el mensaje de control.

Dos unidades base ultrasónicas 28, 29 están instaladas en habitaciones respectivas. En la práctica, pueden haber muchas más unidades base en diferentes habitaciones y/o múltiples unidades base en la misma habitación. En este ejemplo las unidades base ultrasónicas 28, 29 no están conectadas a la red Ethernet 2, aunque pueden estar. Las unidades base ultrasónicas 28, 29 transmiten información de ID de zona periódicamente; esta información de ID de
5 zona puede ser un número único a la unidad base. Su cobertura puede ser toda o solo parte de una habitación o área.
Tres unidades inalámbricas 12a, 12b, 12c están fijadas a respectivos activos, tales como pacientes, doctores o equipo portátil.
10 Las unidades inalámbricas 12a, 12b, 12c pueden recibir señales ultrasónicas desde las unidades base ultrasónicas 28, 29 cuando están en alcance de ellas, y pueden reenviar información relacionada con las señales mediante difusión 802.11 y/o mediante comunicación 802.15.4, como se ha descrito anteriormente.
15 De esta manera, puede implementarse un sistema para rastrear que puede aprovechar la infraestructura 802.11 6, 8, 2 existente para recibir información desde las unidades inalámbricas 12a, 12b, 12c, pero que puede usar también un transceptor 802.15.4 10 para comunicar mensajes, tales como comandos de control, a las unidades inalámbricas 12a, 12b, 12c.
