Abstract

Graft copolymers are obtained by polymerizing vinyl chloride in an aqueous medium with a hydroperoxide derivative of an alpha-olefin polymer in the presence of a polyethylene polyamine. Alpha-olefin polymers specified are those of compounds having the formula CH2 = CHR wherein R is an alkyl group, including copolymers of such olefins with each other and with ethylene preferred polymers are polypropylene and polybutene-1. The hydroperoxide derivatives of the above polyolefins may be prepared by the methods described in Specifications 832,068, 835,578 and 843,190. Polyethylene polyamines specified are diethylene tetramine, triethylene tetramine and tetraethylene pentamine. Also present in the aqueous medium may be a dispersing agent, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol and substances, e.g. sodium hydroxide, to provide the medium with a pH of from 8 to 14.
