Uno de los problemas que impiden el uso generalizado de la bicicleta en las ciudades es el elevado número de robos que padece este tipo de vehículo mientras está aparcado. Los ladrones acostumbran a robar la bicicleta entera o partes de ella, generalmente, una o ambas ruedas y el sillín. Para dificultar el robo, los usuarios suelen utilizar diversos sistemas de candados que deben transportar junto con la bicicleta con los que sujetan una o ambas ruedas a un soporte fijo y además suelen quitar el sillín. Esto último representa una incomodidad para el usuario, pues éste debe desenganchar el sillín de la bicicleta cuando la deja aparcada, acarrear con él y luego volver a engancharlo y ajustarlo cuando necesita volver a utilizar la bicicleta.
