EL PROCESO DE SINTESIS QUIMICA DE LAS DIFERENTES FORMAS OPTICAS DE LA ERGOTIONEINA SE CARACTERIZA EN QUE COMPRENDE ESENCIALMENTE LAS ETAPAS QUE CONSISTEN EN PREPARAR O UTILIZAR UNA SAL DE ESTER DE HISTIDINANALFAR-NALFA-DIMETILADA, SI ES NECESARIO OPTICAMENTE ACTIVO; EN TRATAR ESTE COMPUESTO, POR UN HALOGENOTIONOFORMIATO DE ALKILO, DE ALQUENILO O DE ARILO, EN PRESENCIA DE UNA BASE; Y TRAS LA PROTECCION DEL SUSTITUYENTE AZUFRADO DEL COMPUESTO OBTENIDO, TRANSFORMAR ESTE ULTIMO EN UN COMPUESTO DE TIPO TRIMETILAMONIO, Y EN LIBERAR LA ERGOTIONEINA DESEADA POR SAPONIFICACION O HIDROLISIS ACIDA, SEGUN EL CASO.
