Abstract
Sand (5) in a moulding box (3) is compacted by a blast of compressed air discharged from a drum (1) through an annular passage (16) and diffuser (2). Air flow is controlled by a flexible membrane (11) located within a valve body (7), the membrane normally being pressed against a seating (14) by air pressure supplied through a line (13) to an annular chamber (13) surrounding the membrane. Preferably the membrane is in four parts combining into an rectangular configuration conforming to the perimeter of the moulding box. Preferably an array of impact compaction rams (19) are mounted below the diffuser in a housing (18).
