PARA ELLO SE DEPOSITAN SOBRE CUERPOS PARA CRECIMIENTO LOS MICROORGANISMOS NECESARIOS PARA LA DEPURACION DE LAS AGUAS. LOS CUERPOS (4) TIENEN UN PESO ESPECIFICO SUPERIOR A 1,0 G/CM 3 , PREFERENTEMENTE 1,1 A 1,3 G/CM 3 . LOS MISMOS SE SOMETEN A UN MOVIMIENTO TURBULENTO MEDIANTE LA ENTRADA DE AIRE (5). UNA VEZ PRODUCIDA LA SEDIMENTACION LOS CUERPOS FORMAN UN LECHO SOLIDO ACTIVO BIOLOGICAMENTE ESPECIFICO. DEBIDO A LA ELEVADA VELOCIDAD DE SEDIMENTACION DE LOS CUERPOS SOBRE LOS QUE CRECEN LOS MICROORGANISMOS EN POCO TIEMPO SE PUEDE CONVERTIR, UNA VEZ DESCONECTADA LA AIREACION, EL LECHO FLUIDIZADO AEROBIO EN UN LECHO SOLIDO/FLUIDO ANAEROBIO. LA ENTRADA DE AIRE (5) EN EL REACTOR TAMBIEN SE PUEDE PRODUCIR DE MANERA QUE SE FORMEN ZONAS CON DIFERENTES APORTES DE OXIGENO. ASI, ES POSIBLE QUE SE PRODUZCAN SIMULTANEAMENTE PROCESOS AEROBIOS CON NITRIFICACION Y PROCESOS ANAEROBIOS CON DESNITRIFICACION.
