Abstract

PURPOSE: To accurately discriminate the quality of a catalyst by maintaining hyperoxia and oxygen deficiency to the catalyst at an average value until a composition of a gas mixture varies and increasing the same so as to estimate oxygen-storing ability of the catalyst. CONSTITUTION: In an internal combustion engine 3, fuel-metering means 1 is attached to a suction pipe 2, and exhaust sensors 4, 5 are arranged respectively before and behind a catalyst 6 in an exhaust pipe 7. Further, in addition to means 9 for comparing values detected by the exhaust sensors 4, 5 with a target value generated by means 10, a closed loop controller 11, multiplication means 12 and control means 13 are provided. In this case, a composite section 8 is provided. Furthermore, in the composite section 8, means 19 for comparing a threshold value of a detector 17 with a frequency of a detector 18, and means 20 for outputting a defect signal when the threshold is exceeded are disposed. Thus, defects of the catalyst 6 are discriminated.
