Abstract

Protective coatings on stainless steel produced by sol-gel. The process describes a method for preparing coatings of different ceramic oxides using the sol-gel method and immersion and spray techniques on stainless steel substrates. This process can be used to prepare coatings of variable vitreous or polycrystalline compositions which have excellent homogeneity, high adhesion and good mechanical and thermal compatibility with the metal substrate. These coatings offer an effective barrier against dry and moist rusting at high temperature, marine corrosion and attack by corrosive acids and gases. It is a simple and economical process which can be applied to multiple shapes and sizes of substrate and which may find multiple applications in the chemical, food, power, ceramics, naval industries, etc.
