Abstract
A hydraulic expansion device particularly suitable for the production of a camshaft wherein individual camshaft elements are secured about a hollow shaft at axially spaced apart locations comprises a plurality of individual hydraulic expansion elements 10, 12, 14. Each element includes a fluid supply bore 18, 20, 22 a radially extending bore 28 communicating between the axial bore and the radially outer surface of the element at a position intermediate a pair of sealing rings 24, 26 by means of which each expansion element is sealed to the interior wall of the shaft to be expanded. The individual expansion elements may be secured together adjacent one another to form a rigid unit throughout the length of the device by screw threaded engagement 44 with one another, by bayonet engagement, by welding 46 or by any other suitable securing means. The sealing rings 24, 26 may be replaced by an elastomeric sleeve (84, Fig. 3). Also, the expansion elements (96, Fig.4) may be axially spaced from one another.
