Abstract

Sulphur dioxide is removed from flue gases using a suspension of absorbent containing limestone operates as follows:- a) sulphite is oxidized to sulphate in the sump of a preliminary stage absorption in the pH range of from 4 to 5 by the introduction of air into the suspension and coarse grained gypsum is flushed out of the system as a suspension with a high solids content, b) the sulphur dioxide of the flue gas is bound as sulphite by the suspension of absorbent in an after-stage absorption in the pH range of about 6 and this sulphite is collected separately in an outflow and returned to the storage tank for the suspension or absorbent, c) the water losses of the preliminary stage absorption are made good by the low solids overflow of absorbent, d) the water losses of the after-stage absorption are made good by the wash water of a mist eliminator connected downstream thereof, the flue gases being now subjected to a preliminary washing with sea water and/or salt water before the preliminary stage absorption.
