Abstract
4-(7'-benzofuryl)2,6-dimethyl 1,4-dihydropyridine 3,5-dicarboxylic acid diesters of formula (III), in which at least one R group contains a chiral C atom, for use as an anti-arrhythmic and antagonist of calcium, are made by reacting one equiv. of 2-(7'-benzofuranylidene) acetoacetate of formula (I) with one equiv. of a beta-amino crotonate ester of formula (II) under reflux in a solvent with b.pt. of 65-130 deg.C, removal of solvent by rotary evaporation, recrystallising from a solvent, and separating the diastereomers by chromatography.
