Abstract
Electrode metal dissolution in a molten alkali metal carbonate fuel cell is reduced by initially adding to the electrolyte an agent selected from: a sacrificial electrode metal, a metal promoting a common ion effect with an electrode metal, seed metal particles serving as electrode metal pption. sites, and combinations of these. A further, or alternative, step involves maintaining the acid/base conditions of the electrolyte during cell operation at near neutral by maintaining a CO2 pp. of 0.5-1.5 atmos.
