A process for the sulfonation of aromatic hydrocarbon alcohol, comprising introducing a gasiform sulfonation agent containing at least 3 and not more than 30 volume% of sulfur trioxide vapor in mixture with an inert gas in contact with a hydrocarbon aromatic alcohol having an alkyl group with from 5 to 18 carbon atoms at a temperature which is substantially within the range of 10 to 40º, in a total amount of substantially from 1.1 to 1.4 moles of sulfur trioxide per mole of hydrocarbon aromatic alcohol and maintaining said gasiform agent at said temperature in contact with said hydrocarbon aromatic alcohol until the latter has been sulfonated virtually completely.
