Abstract
The invention comprises a method of making bis-hydroxyaryl-alkanes, especially diphenylol propane, by the reaction between phenolic and carbonyl compounds in acidic medium in which the ratio of phenol to carbonyl compound is at least 10 : 1, and preferably 12 to 15 : 1, with or without mercaptans as additional catalysts, and continuously, if desired, preferably in two consecutive vessels. In an example a charge containing proportions of phenol and acetone of from 10 to 20 : 1 and a quantity of methyl mercaptan and hydrogen chloride was continuously treated at various temperatures in one or two reaction chambers, for various periods of time and the yields of diphenylol propane compared in a table.
