Definitions
- the invention relates to a layer system for coating a metallic substrate to form an electrode plate, comprising at least one cover layer made of metal oxide.
- the invention further relates to an electrode plate comprising a metallic substrate and such a layer system and a method for their production. Furthermore, the invention relates to a fuel cell, an electrolyzer or a redox flow cell comprising at least one such electrode plate.
- a bipolar plate for a fuel cell or an electrolyzer is already known from DE 100 58 337 A1, in which a conductive and corrosion-resistant protective coating made of a metal oxide is formed on at least one side of a metal sheet.
- the metal oxide is formed in particular from an oxide of the elements or alloys from the group consisting of tin, zinc and indium.
- Sheets made of aluminum, copper, stainless steel, chromium-plated stainless steel, titanium, titanium alloys and iron-containing compounds are used, which can have a coating of at least one of the elements tin, zinc, nickel, chromium.
- the object is achieved for the layer system for coating a metallic substrate to form an electrode plate, comprising at least one cover layer made of metal oxide, at least one intermediate layer bearing the cover layer and an underlayer bearing the intermediate layer(s), - wherein the sub-layer is formed of titanium or a titanium-niobium alloy or chromium,
- the at least one intermediate layer consists of titanium niobium nitride and/or titanium niobium carbide and/or titanium niobium carbonitride and/or titanium carbide and/or titanium nitride and/or chromium carbide and/or chromium carbonitride and/or homogeneous indium tin oxide, optionally doped with a first doping and/or homogeneous tin oxide doped with a second doping is formed, and
- the cover layer is formed from a network of nanofibers either a) from indium tin oxide, which optionally has a third doping with at least one element from the group comprising carbon, nitrogen, boron, fluorine, hydrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, chlorine, bromine , Aluminum, silicon, titanium, chromium, cobalt, nickel, copper, zirconium, niobium, molybdenum, silver, antimony, hafnium, tantalum, tungsten, or b) is formed from doped tin oxide, the tin oxide being the fourth doping at least one of elements from the group comprising niobium, tantalum, antimony, fluorine.
- the layer system is characterized by high long-term stability combined with high electrical conductivity and low costs, since it does not require any precious metal.
- the layer system ensures excellent protection against corrosion for a metallic base material or substrate of an electrode plate, in particular a bipolar plate.
- An indium tin oxide is also abbreviated as ITO (indium tin oxide) in the following.
- the layer system is preferably formed by a PVD or a CVD method (PVD: Physical Vapor Deposition; CVD: Chemical Vapor Deposition) or a PACVD method (PACVD: Plasma-assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition).
- PVD Physical Vapor Deposition
- CVD Chemical Vapor Deposition
- PACVD Plasma-assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition
- Elongated or columnar structures with a diameter of up to 200 nm and a length of up to 1000 nm are regarded as nanofibers.
- the nanofibers can be designed to taper to a point.
- a cover layer from a network of nanofibers reference is made to the publication "3D ITO-nanowire networks as transparent electrode for all terrain substrate", Qiang Li et al., Scientific Reports (2019) 9:4983. See: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-019-41579-2
- ITO nanofibers could also be used by the applicant for fuel cell, electrolysis and redox flow bipolar plates by non-reactive sputtering technology with a deposition rate of 40 A/min and from a target made of ln2Os:SnO2 at a concentration of 90:10 at.-% are produced.
- the temperature as well as the SnC content are the main growth factors in the production of the ITO nanofibers. Growth occurs through atoms vaporized from the target and deposited onto a substrate. The temperature range for growth is 150 °C to 500 °C. Increasing the temperature increases the mean fiber length and the mean diameter of the fibers, decreases the neighbor distance, and increases the number of fibers per unit area.
- the SnO2 content is preferably at most 30 at %. The development of the mean length as well as the mean diameter of the nanofibers depends on the deposition time.
- the ITO nanofibers preferably grow on a thin, dense ITO layer.
- nanofibers are also possible on the basis of doped tin oxide.
- the first doping preferably corresponds to the third doping and the second doping preferably corresponds to the fourth doping.
- a concentration of the elements of the first and/or the third doping in the indium tin oxide is in particular in the range from >0 to 20 at %, preferably in the range from 0.5 to 20 at %.
- a concentration of the elements of the second and/or the fourth doping in the tin oxide is in particular in the range from >0 to 20 at.%, preferably in the range from 0.5 to 20 at.%.
- Cover layers made of indium tin oxide which have an indium content in the range from 70 to 90 at. % are particularly preferred. Particular preference is given to indium proportions in the range from 75 to 85 at. %, which have high electrical conductivity.
- the underlayer serves in particular as an adhesion promoter between a metallic substrate and the at least one intermediate layer. Furthermore, the underlayer forms conductive oxides and thus provides galvanic corrosion protection for the metallic substrate of a bipolar plate.
- the underlayer preferably has a layer thickness in the range from 1 nm to 300 nm.
- the intermediate layer also serves as an adhesion promoter between the bottom layer and the top layer.
- the at least one intermediate layer can form conductive oxides and thus provide galvanic corrosion protection for the underlayer and the metallic substrate of an electrode plate.
- the at least one intermediate layer also provides a barrier for hydrogen, so that it cannot penetrate in the direction of the metallic substrate and damage it.
- a layer thickness of an individual intermediate layer is preferably selected in the range from 0.1 to 3.0 ⁇ m. However, there may be two or more intermediate layers.
- the top layer protects the underlayer and the intermediate layer(s) mechanically and from corrosive attack.
- the cover layer has a layer thickness in the range from 0.01 to 15 ⁇ m, in particular in the range from 0.1 to 3 ⁇ m.
- the layer system according to the invention comprising the underlayer, the at least one intermediate layer and the top layer, preferably has an overall thickness in the range from 0.1 to 20 ⁇ m.
- a metallic substrate preferably made of steel, in particular austenitic steel or austenitic stainless steel, have proven to be advantageous for forming an electrode plate:
- Example 1 Underlayer: TiNb layer thickness: 100 nm
- Top layer indium tin oxide nanofibers with 80% by volume indium

- FIG. 1 shows an electrode plate 2 in the form of a bipolar plate with a layer system 1, which here has a metallic substrate 2a or a metallic carrier plate made of austenitic stainless steel.
- the bipolar plate has an inflow area 3a with openings 4 and an outlet area 3b with further openings 4', which are used to supply a fuel cell with process gases and to remove reaction products from the fuel cell.
- the bipolar plate also has a gas distributor structure 5 on each side, which is provided for contact with a polymer electrolyte membrane 7 (compare FIG. 2).
- FIG. 2 schematically shows a fuel cell system 100 comprising a plurality of fuel cells 10.
- Each fuel cell 10 comprises a polymer electrolyte membrane 7 which is adjacent to electrode plates 2, 2' in the form of bipolar plates on both sides.
- the same reference symbols as in FIG. 1 identify the same elements.
- FIG. 3 shows a cross section through the layer system 1 according to FIG. It can be seen that a top layer 1a, an intermediate layer 1b and a bottom layer 1c are present.
- the lower layer 1c is located on a side B of the layer system 1 which is arranged facing the substrate 2a of the bipolar plate 2 .
- the cover layer 1a is located on a side A of the layer system 1 which is arranged away from the substrate 2a of the electrode plate 2 .
