Definitions
- the invention relates to a cyhnder lock.
- a standard cylinder lock consists of inter alia a lock housing with lock cylinder and a carrier. By turning the lock cylinder with the associated key, the carrier turns along with it. Due to the carrier being for instance connected with the dead bolt, the cyhnder lock is thereby locked, or unlocked.
- a widely used method of intrusion is the so-called lock snapping. With special tools the lock housing is pulled out of the cylinder lock. The burglar then has free access to the carrier and can simply, without key, make it turn and thereby open the cylinder lock. To prevent this so-called lock snapping, protected cylinder locks are known.
- EP 2 730 727 A2 shows a cylinder lock according to the pre-characterizing portion of claim 1.
- EP’727 shows a cylinder lock (Schliefizylinder 1) comprising a lock housing ( Gehauseteil 2b), rotatable blocking disk ( Kernverlang réelle 11), and a blocking element ( Verriegelungsbolzen 20) which is held back by a retaining element
- Comparable cylinder locks are described in GB 2 515 054, EP 3 517 713 A1 and GB 2545389 A.
- the invention provides a cylinder lock according to claim 1. More particularly, the invention provides a cyhnder lock for mounting on a panel.
- a panel is, for example, a door or a window.
- the cylinder lock comprises a first lock housing provided with a first lock cylinder which is received in the first lock housing in a manner rotatable around a central axis and which is operable from a first side of the panel.
- the cylinder lock further comprises a rotatable carrier which is provided with a carrier cam and which, viewed from the first side, is located behind the first lock housing, in line with the first lock housing.
- the cylinder lock comprises in addition a blocking assembly provided between the first lock housing and the carrier.
- the blocking assembly comprises a rotatable blocking disk and a blocking element.
- the blocking disk is nonrotatably connected with the first lock cylinder and the carrier, and is configured for transmitting a rotation of the first lock cylinder to the carrier.
- the blocking element in normal use, is in a release position, where the blocking element is clear of the blocking disk.
- the blocking element is in a blocking position if the first lock housing has been removed from the cylinder lock, in which blocking position the blocking element blocks rotation of the blocking disk and whereby the blocking disk screens the carrier off from access from the first side of the panel.
- the burglar When attempting to break in, the burglar can pull the first lock housing out of the cyhnder lock. This is not prevented. In contrast with an unprotected cylinder lock, however, the burglar cannot get to the carrier.
- the carrier is screened off by the blocking disk, as a result of which access to the carrier from the first side of the panel is not possible. Due to removal of the first lock housing, the blocking element will slip into the blocking position. In that position, the blocking element hinders rotation of the blocking disk. As a consequence, it not possible either to make the carrier turn by having the blocking disk turn. The cylinder lock will therefore remain locked.
- the blocking element is a blocking pin which is urged in the direction of the blocking disk by means of a biasing element.
- the blocking pin is provided with a cam having an oblique surface, which is located obliquely with respect to the urging direction of the biasing element.
- the blocking assembly further includes a retaining element which is clamped between the oblique surface of the cam and the first lock housing, and hinders a movement of the blocking pin in the direction of the blocking disk.
- the biasing element comprises a spring and the blocking pin is provided with an open blocking pin chamber at an end of the blocking pin remote from the blocking disk.
- the spring extends, at least in part, in the blocking pin chamber. In the release position, there is received in the blocking pin chamber a ring which surrounds the spring. When the blocking pin is in the blocking position, the ring has moved out of the blocking pin chamber and hinders that the blocking pin can be returned from the blocking position to the release position.
- the ring provides an extra protection from burglary.
- the blocking pin After the first lock housing has been taken away from the cylinder lock, the blocking pin is in the blocking position. Due to the ring, it is not possible to put the blocking pin in the release position again in order thus to circumvent the protection of the blocking disk.
- Figure 1 shows an exploded view of an example of a cylinder lock according to the invention
- Figure 2 shows a partly cutaway side view of the example of Figure 1;
- FIG. 3 shows detail III of Figure 2
- Figure 4 shows the example of Figure 2 if the first lock housing has been removed from the rest of the cylinder lock
- FIG. 5 shows detail V of Figure 4.
- the invention provides a cylinder lock 10 for mounting on a panel.
- a panel is for instance a door or a window.
- the cylinder lock 10 comprises a first lock housing 12 provided with a first lock cylinder 14 which is received in the first lock housing 12 in a manner rotatable around a central axis L and which is operable from a first side of the panel.
- the cylinder lock 10 further comprises a rotatable carrier 16 which is provided with a carrier cam 18 and which, viewed from the first side, is located behind the first lock housing 12, in line with the first lock housing 12.
- the cyhnder lock 10 comprises in addition a blocking assembly 20, 22, 28, 30, 32, 36 provided between the first lock housing 12 and the carrier 16.
- the blocking assembly 20, 22, 28, 30, 32, 36 includes a rotatable blocking disk 20 and a blocking element.
- the blocking disk 20 is nonrotatably connected with the first lock cylinder 14 and the carrier 16, and is configured for transmitting a rotation of the first lock cylinder 14 to the carrier 16.
- the blocking element in normal use, is in a release position, in which the blocking element is clear of the blocking disk 20.
- the blocking element is in a blocking position if the first lock housing 12 has been removed from the cylinder lock 10, in which blocking position the blocking element blocks rotation of the blocking disk 20 and whereby the blocking disk 20 screens the carrier 16 off from access from the first side of the panel. It is noted that the blocking disk 20 is solely nonrotatably connected with the first lock cylinder 14.
- the blocking disk 20 and the first lock cylinder 14 are kept together solely by their position in the blocking assembly 20, 22, 28, 30, 32, 36 and the first lock housing, respectively.
- the blocking assembly 20, 22, 28, 30, 32, 36 and the first lock housing 12 may for instance be connected by a bridge 46, as is described hereinbelow in an exemplary embodiment. If, however, the first lock housing 12 has been removed from the cylinder lock 10, for instance by lock snapping, there is no connection keeping the blocking disk 20 and the first lock cylinder 14 together.
- the carrier 16 may be connected by means of the carrier cam 18 with a dead bolt and possibly with a catch bolt. In this way, by rotation of the carrier 16, the cyhnder lock 10 can be locked or unlocked, and possibly the panel opened.
- the blocking element is a blocking pin 22 which is urged in the direction of the blocking disk 20 by means of a biasing element.
- the blocking pin 22 is provided with a cam 24 having an oblique surface, which is located obliquely with respect to the urging direction of the biasing element.
- the blocking assembly 20, 22, 28, 30, 32, 36 further includes a retaining element which is clamped between the oblique surface of the cam 24 and the first lock housing 12 and hinders a movement of the blocking pin 22 in the direction of the blocking disk 20.
- the retaining element which, in an embodiment of which an example is shown in the figures, may be implemented as a plurahty of small balls 30, ensures that the blocking pin 22 is held back if it is urged by the biasing element in the direction of the blocking disk 20.
- the blocking pin 22 hooks, by way of its cam 24, behind the retaining element, as a result of which the blocking pin 22 cannot be moved in the direction of the blocking disk 20. Due to the cam 24 being located obliquely with respect to the urging direction of the biasing element, the biasing element exerts a force not only on the blocking pin 22, but also on the retaining element. The retaining element is then pushed by, and away from, the blocking pin 22.
- the blocking pin 22 presses the retaining element against the first lock housing 12, the retaining element then sitting clamped between the blocking pin 22 and the first lock housing 12. If, however, the first lock housing 12 has been removed from the cylinder lock 10, for instance by lock snapping, the retaining element is not held back by the first lock housing 12 anymore. In that case, the retaining element is free to move.
- the blocking pin 22 will then, by way of its oblique cam 24, push the retaining element away, as a result of which the biasing element is not hindered anymore from moving the blocking pin 22 in the direction of the blocking disk. In consequence, the blocking element thus slips into the blocking position.
- the biasing element comprises a spring 28, for example a compression spring.
- the blocking pin 22 is provided with an open blocking pin chamber 50 at an end of the blocking pin 22 remote from the blocking disk 20, with the spring 28 extending, at least in part, in the blocking pin chamber 50.
- a ring 52 which surrounds the spring 28.
- the ring 52 can have moved out of the blocking pin chamber 50. The ring 52 hinders in that case that the blocking pin 22 can be brought from the blocking position to the release position.
- the ring 52 provides an extra burglary protection.
- the blocking pin 22 is in the blocking position. Due to the ring 52, it is not possible to put the blocking pin 22 in the release position again to thereby circumvent the protection of the blocking disk 20.
- the ring may for instance be clamped between the end of the blocking pin 22 remote from the blocking disk 20 and a part that is fixed with respect to the cylinder lock 10. This fixed part can be, for example, the block housing 32 or the bridge 46 as is described hereinbelow in an exemplary embodiment. In this way, the blocking pin 22 is hindered from being able to move away from the blocking disk 20 again.
- the blocking disk 20 may be provided with a hole 26 for receiving therein an end of the blocking pin 22.
- the blocking position involves a pin-and-hole connection between the end of the blocking pin 22 and the hole 26 in the blocking disk 20.
- Such a connection is strong and, due to its simplicity, highly suitable to secure the blocking disk 20.
- the blocking element can also be a blocking pin that is arranged in the blocking disk 20 and that is urged away from the blocking disk 20 by a biasing element. In the blocking position of the blocking element, an end of the blocking pin protrudes from the blocking disk 20 and is received in a hole in an element fixed with respect to the cylinder lock 10. This may be, for example, a hole in a block housing.
- a block housing may be, for example, the block housing 32 as is described hereinbelow in an exemplary embodiment.
- the carrier 16 has a first rotational position in which the cylinder lock 10 is open, and the carrier 16 has a second rotational position in which the cylinder lock 10 is locked.
- the hole 26 in the blocking disk 20 faces the blocking pin 22 in order to be able to receive it if the carrier 16 is in the second rotational position.
- the above-described blocking disk 20 with blocking pin 22 are especially intended for intrusion prevention. Such a protection is not needed, or less so, if the cybnder lock is not locked, or open, since one who, in that situation, is seeking to gain unauthorized access, then does not need to break in, but can simply open the panel.
- the intrusion protection is especially of relevance if the cylinder lock 10 is locked. In that position, the blocking pin 22 must be able to form a pin-and-hole connection to be able to put the blocking pin 22 in the blocking position. This is rendered possible in this embodiment in that, if the cylinder lock 10 is locked, the hole 26 faces the blocking pin 22.
- the retaining element can comprise a plurahty of small metal balls 30, as is clearly visible in the example that is represented in the figures.
- Small metal balls 30 are effective as retaining element and readily obtainable.
- a pin or stud could be used.
- the blocking assembly 20, 22, 28, 30, 32, 36 includes a block housing 32 in which the blocking disk 20, the blocking pin 22, the biasing element and the retaining element are received.
- This block housing 32 may for instance be provided with one or more chambers in which the various parts of the blocking assembly 20, 22, 28, 30, 32, 36 are accommodated.
- the block housing 32 is provided with a blocking disk chamber 38 with a retaining wall 40 extending perpendicular to the central axis L.
- the blocking disk 20 then abuts against the retaining wall 40.
- the blocking disk 20 is further provided with a groove 34.
- the blocking assembly 20, 22, 28, 30, 32, 36 further includes a retaining ring 36, an inner side of which is placed in the groove 34 of the blocking disk 20.
- the retaining ring 36 abuts against a side of the block housing 32 remote from the first lock cylinder 14, so that a movement of the blocking disk 20 in axial direction is prevented by the retaining ring 36 and the retaining wall 40.
- the blocking disk 20 Due to the blocking disk 20 being held back in axial direction by the retaining ring 36 and the retaining wall 40, the blocking disk 20 cannot move in axial direction. It is then merely possible for the blocking disk 20 to rotate and transmit the rotation of the first lock cylinder 14 to the carrier 16, if the blocking pin 22 is in the release position. If the blocking pin 22 is in the blocking position, the blocking disk 20 is fixed altogether and no movement is possible anymore.
- the cylinder lock 10 further comprises a second lock housing 42 and a bridge 46.
- the second lock housing 42 is provided with either a second lock cylinder 44 which is received in the second lock housing 42 and which is operable from a second side of the panel, or an operating knob assembly which is received in the second lock housing 42 and which is operable from a second side of the panel.
- the second side of the panel is located opposite the first side of the panel.
- the carrier 16 is received between the first lock housing 12 and the second lock housing 42.
- the bridge 46 connects the first lock housing 12, the blocking assembly 20, 22, 28, 30, 32,
- the cylinder lock 10 is also operable from the second side of the panel.
- the panel may for instance be an outside door in a house which is provided with an outer side on an outside of the house and an inner side on an inside of the house.
- the first side of the outside door is then provided with an intrusion protection by means of the blocking disk 20 and the blocking element. This first side is then preferably the outer side of the outside door.
- the second side of the outside door is then the inner side.
- the second lock cylinder 44, or the operating knob assembly the outside door is also operable from the inside.
- the first lock housing 12, the blocking assembly 20, 22, 28, 30, 32, 36, and the second lock housing 42 may for instance by means of screws be screwed down on the bridge 46.
- the bridge 46 then provides for an axial connection in the direction of central axis L between the parts mentioned.
- the first lock housing 12 is provided with a substantially constant circumferential contour extending in axial direction.
- the second lock housing 42 is provided with a substantially constant circumferential contour extending in axial direction.
- the circumferential contour of the second lock housing 42 can then correspond to the circumferential contour of the first lock housing 12.
- the circumferential contours of the two lock housings 12, 42 are in line with each other.
- the circumferential contours correspond and are in line with each other, the cylinder lock 10 can be simply removed from the panel and replaced with another cylinder lock 10. This makes a replacement of the lock cylinders 14, 44 easy. This may be desired, for instance, if an associated key has been lost.
- the circumferential contour can be, for example, a Euro profile. A Euro profile has standardized dimensions, which facilitates exchange between cylinder locks from different manufacturers.
- the carrier 16 is rotatable relative to the first and the second lock housing 12, 42.
- the carrier 16 is positionable in a first rotational position in which the carrier cam 18 is in a recess between the first and the second lock housing 12, 42 and in which the carrier cam 18, moreover, viewed in axial direction of the cylinder lock 10, is within the circumferential contours.
- the carrier 16 is positionable, by rotation, in a second rotational position in which the carrier cam 18, viewed in axial direction, extends outside the circumferential contours.
- the carrier cam 18 can operate the dead bolt and possibly the catch bolt.
- the bridge 46 is provided with a break weakening 48, at the location of which the bridge 46 breaks when on the first lock housing 12 a force exceeding a defined limiting value is exerted.
- the break weakening 48 may be implemented as a narrowing in the bridge 46, as is shown in the figures. Because the bridge 46 will break at the break weakening 48 and not in another place, it can be determined where the bridge 46 will break. The best place for the break weakening 48 is near a side of the first lock housing 12 that abuts against the blocking assembly 20, 22, 28, 30, 32, 36.
- the limiting value is preferably so low that if a force is exerted on the first lock housing 12, the break weakening 48 is the first part of the cylinder lock 10 to break.
