Um die Fertigung der Nut-und-Feder-Verbindung zu vereinfachen, empfiehlt es sich, dass die Nut 5 und die Feder 6 einen schwalbenschwanzförmigen Querschnitt aufweisen, da diese mit einfachen Mitteln in das Holz der Spannelemente 1, 2 eingearbeitet werden können. Ein besonders guter Kompromiss zwischen einfacher Fertigung und guter Verbindung zwischen Nut 5 und Feder 6 kann erreicht werden, wenn Grund und Seitenwände der Nut 5 im Querschnitt einen Winkel von weniger als 85 Grad, vorzugsweise 75 Grad einschließen. Die Feststellschraube 7 wird zum Festlegen der Spannelemente 1, 2 in Spreizstellung in das Spannelement 1 gedreht, sodass sie sich quer zur Spreizrichtung 3 in Richtung Nutgrund des einen Spannelements 2, bewegt. Ab dem Kontakt der Feststellschraube 7 mit dem Spannelement 2 werden die beiden Spannelemente 1, 2 quer zur Spreizrichtung 3 auseinandergedrückt, worauf aufgrund der Nut-und-Feder-Verbindung ein Klemmschluss zwischen den beiden Spannelementen 1, 2 entsteht. Sollten höhere Spreizkräfte benötigt werden, als nur über einen solchen Klemmschluss aufrechterhalten werden können, kann die Feststellschraube 7 weitergedreht werden, sodass sie in das Spannelement 2 eindringt und einen Formschluss erzeugt.
