Definitions
- the invention relates to a horn antenna and a method for converting an existing horn antenna into a horn antenna with increased performance.
- a horn antenna is known from practice: In such a horn antenna or horn structure there is a feed point or antenna rod, DS (damped sinusoidal) resonator or feed. This is located in a waveguide (wave guide), which serves to direct or bundle the electromagnetic energy radiated by the antenna rod in the direction of the horn antenna (the horn).
- the waveguide is usually a metal body in the structure of a cuboid, which has an opening on one side. This opening is connected directly to the horn and directs the radiated electromagnetic energy into the horn antenna or horn structure, which then, depending on its geometry (length, angle, aperture, etc.), directs the electromagnetic energy in the direction of the antenna aperture and thus e.g. B. a target directs and bundles.
- the geometry of the waveguide itself depends on the length of the rod antenna or the feed antenna and the radiated wavelength or the wavelength range.
- the object of the invention is to propose improvements in relation to horn antennas.
- the horn antenna is used to emit an electromagnetic HPEM (high-power electro-magnetic) microwave pulse along a central axis of the horn antenna.
- the horn antenna contains a microwave generator to generate the pulse.
- the generator contains a waveguide.
- the waveguide has a generator opening for outputting the pulse generated within the waveguide.
- the waveguide extends along the central axis.
- the horn antenna includes a horn structure. This is used to shape the pulse generated in the waveguide and transferred to the horn structure via the generator opening.
- the horn structure has an entrance port.
- the input opening is connected—in particular directly—to the generator opening and is used for irradiating or recording the pulse.
- the horn structure has an emission opening, which serves to emit the shaped pulse.
- the generator contains at least one HPEM source for generating the pulse.
- One or more of the sources can be involved in the generation of a respective pulse.
- Each of the HPEM sources contains at least two antennas.
- the antennas of each of the sources are arranged parallel to the central axis in a row or in series, in particular along a straight line.
- Each source forms its own row here.
- Each of the antennas is used to generate or emit a pulse component. Pulse components that are generated or emitted at the same time are superimposed to form a pulse, so that the pulse at a specific point in time is formed as the sum of the respective pulse components that are present at the same time at this point in time.
- serial antenna/resonator arrangements/arrays are used in a waveguide.
- the result is an increase in performance and effective range of the overall system (horn antenna) while maintaining the horn antenna geometry / structure.
- Eg requires the Use of four feed antennas (antennas) compared to a single feed antenna only requires a small adjustment of the waveguide length by approx. 30 cm.
- the horn geometry remains unchanged.
- four feed antennas four times the power can be coupled into the waveguide or the horn structure.
- the radiated field strength and thus the achievable range can be almost doubled (ideal case).
- At least one of the antennas is an antenna rod and/or a -DS resonator and/or a feed and/or a dipole and/or a group.
- Such antennas are particularly suitable for the invention.
- the waveguide is a metallic body.
- Such a waveguide is particularly suitable for the invention.
- the waveguide has a cuboid shape.
- the waveguide is preferably open on one side, in particular open only on this one side. Such waveguides are particularly effective for the invention.
- the horn structure and/or the waveguide has an angular cross section with respect to the central axis. Such shapes are particularly favorable for the invention.
- At least two of the antennas are arranged together in one plane. In this way, simultaneously transmitted pulse components from the antennas can be combined particularly effectively to form a total pulse.
- adjacent antennas of this HPEM source are at the same distance from one another.
- a suitable control of the individual antennas to achieve an effective addition of the pulse components to form a (cumulative) pulse is thus possible in a particularly simple manner.
- the horn antenna contains a control unit. This is set up - for example by hard wiring or programming - to control a single antenna in order to generate the pulse.
- the control unit is also set up to alternatively control at least two of the antennas with regard to the activation and the phase position of their respective pulse component in such a way that the pulse components of these antennas are superimposed on the pulse in such a way that that its radiation direction is directed parallel to the central axis towards the generator opening.
- the antennas can belong to one or more HPEM sources. In particular, all antennas are controlled together in this case in order to generate the pulse from all pulse components. In this way, a particularly powerful pulse can be generated by the horn antenna.
- the exact control of the antennas with regard to waveform, pulse duration, phase position, etc. is determined or specified in particular by measurement, simulation, empirically, etc. and depends in particular on the respective conditions of the waveguide, the antennas, in particular the geometric relationships of all components involved .
- control unit is set up to control the antennas or feeds individually or synchronously or with a time offset in relation to one or more other antennas.
- the control takes place in particular up to their respective maximum power.
- Certain desired properties can be imparted to the pulse by appropriate control.
- the exact control etc. is determined as above.
- control unit is set up to control individual antennas in a burst mode with time intervals between them.
- effective burst pulses can be generated by the horn antenna.
- correspondingly “large” time intervals are selected here in order to actually generate individual bursts.
- control unit is set up to control at least two of the antennas in such a way that the wave fronts of the pulse components are constructively superimposed in the direction of the central axis towards the emission opening in or to the wave front of the pulse.
- the individual antennas are driven "serially in phase” in order to generate a pulse with a wavefront of maximum possible energy.
- the exact control etc. is determined as above.
- the object of the invention is also achieved by a method according to patent claim 11. This is used for redesigning, ie for changing or adapting an existing design of a (existing or already designed) horn antenna not according to the invention to a (modified, new) one with increased performance horn antenna according to the invention.
- the method is based on at least one respective first antenna that is present in an existing horn antenna that is not according to the invention. In particular, only this single antenna is present there.
- the number of antennas for each HPEM source is constructively increased, ie z. B. from one to two, three or four antennas.
- the remaining antennas of the HPEM source that are added to the first one are then arranged in series with the first antenna.
- the length of the waveguide is increased while the other dimensions of the horn antenna remain unchanged.
- a separate HPEM source or antenna group is created for each first antenna.
- a plurality of first antennas are combined in an HPEM source and supplemented by at least one further antenna.
- an existing horn antenna can be easily converted into a more powerful horn antenna.
- the invention is based on the following findings, observations and considerations and also has the following embodiments.
- the embodiments are sometimes also referred to as “the invention” for the sake of simplicity.
- the embodiments can also contain parts or combinations of the above-mentioned embodiments or correspond to them and/or optionally also include embodiments that have not been mentioned before.
- the invention is based on the idea of making it possible to increase the performance and increase the range of HPEM horn antennas while maintaining the antenna size, horn structure and horn size. Another idea is to increase the power density and integration density of HPEM horn antennas.
- the invention is based on the following considerations: An increase in the performance and range of a horn antenna can be achieved by enlarging the horn structure and the aperture of the horn accordingly. This leads to a better focusing of the radiated energy on the central axis of the system. In many cases, especially in HPEM applications, it is desirable not to further increase the size of the antenna system or the horn antenna, but rather to keep it smaller. An increase in the performance and the range of the horn antenna with a given horn geometry or dimensions can then be B. be realized by increasing the power supplied to the horn.
- the invention is based on the knowledge that--as described above--in a horn antenna known from practice there is only a single feed point or antenna rod etc. and the power supplied can be increased to increase the power.
- the invention is based on the consideration that a further increase in the effective range and performance of HPEM systems by coupling the HPEM array principle with an HPEM horn antenna, by integrating several HPEM DS resonators (HPEM DS array) or other antenna structures (rod antenna , dipole antenna) into one or more HPEM horn antenna structure(s).
- HPEM DS array HPEM DS resonators
- rod antenna dipole antenna
- the performance and effective range of the system can be significantly increased by parallel, synchronous simultaneous operation and control of the individual DS resonators, antenna rods or antenna dipoles and superposition of the synchronously radiated wave fronts.
- the waveguide becomes significantly wider with an increasing number of resonators integrated in parallel.
- the enlargement of the waveguide geometry then in turn requires a necessary adjustment of the individual angles of the horn structure (e.g. with a given aperture). i.e. in this case, the horn geometry or the horn antenna must be completely redesigned and adapted to the dimensions of the waveguide, which is costly and time-consuming.
- the invention is also based on the idea of a method that enables the increase in the effective range and performance of HPEM systems through "serial", phase-related operation of multiple antennas/antenna rods, monopoles, dipoles, DS resonators.
- serial phase-related operation of multiple antennas/antenna rods, monopoles, dipoles, DS resonators.
- the electromagnetic fields are superimposed primarily along the DS resonators, antenna rods or dipoles arranged in series in a line.
- the basic principle of the HPEM DS directional antenna is combined with the basic principle of a horn antenna with a waveguide.
- the opening or the interface between waveguide and horn structure can remain unchanged and is independent of whether one, two or more ("N") DS resonators, antenna rods, dipoles or feed antennas are integrated into the waveguide.
- N DS resonators, antenna rods, dipoles or feed antennas are integrated into the waveguide.
- only the length of the waveguide has to be adjusted to the number and wavelength, or the distance between the feed antennas and the waveguide.
- the antenna feeds can be controlled and operated individually, synchronously or with a certain time offset compared to one or more other feed antennas.
- a "burst mode" is also possible, in which the individual antennas are driven at greater time intervals from one another.
- the control of the serial feed antennas in the waveguide is particularly advantageous in such a way that the radiated wave fronts of the individual feed antennas are dependent in the direction of the serially arranged feed antennas and, above all, in the direction of the interface to the horn structure/opening/aperture/interface from the respective distance of the individual antenna feeds from each other, constructively superimposed in the wavefront.
- This can e.g.
- the overall performance of the system is significantly increased and the effective range can be increased by up to a factor of two (ideally assumed) compared to using a single feed antenna.
- An essential advantage of the invention is that a given or existing (particularly not according to the invention) horn structure with a given geometry, opening angles and interface to the waveguide, which is designed for a specific frequency response, can remain unchanged or only marginally so Adjustments are required as long as the radiated frequency range is not to be changed.
- a serial in-phase operation (phase-offset according to the feed antenna distances) of several DS resonators, antenna rods, dipoles, feed antennas in a waveguide or in a horn antenna takes place.
- the result is an increase in integration capability with a simultaneous increase in performance.
- An HPEM DS multi-feed horn antenna thus results according to the invention.
- the invention there is a method and system for amplification, focusing, alignment of HPEM beams/pulses by serial, phase-related operation of several HPEM DS resonators/antennas/rods/groups/feeds in a waveguide/horn antenna. The result is a space-saving integration and increased performance of an HPEM horn antenna system while possibly retaining the essential horn size / geometry.
- the invention is suitable, inter alia, for use in stationary HPEM systems or on a trailer for various applications (e.g. for counter-UAS (unmanned aerial system) as vehicle protection, C-UAS field camp protection, etc.). It is also suitable for mobile HPEM systems for land use integrated on a vehicle for self-protection as part of NNbS (close and near range protection) and MGCS (Main Ground Combat System) for various applications (e.g. Counter-UAS, C-IED (counter-improvised explosive devices), convoy protection etc.). It is also suitable for mobile HPEM systems for air and sea applications integrated on an aircraft, drone or ship for self-protection within the framework of NNbS for various applications (e.g. counter-UAS, C-IED, stopping boats, etc.) .

Abstract
Description
