Definitions

  • the invention relates to a fitted sheet for covering the top face and side faces of a rectangular mattress.
  • the invention also relates to a method for manufacturing a fitted sheet for covering the top face and side faces of a rectangular mattress.
  • the invention relates to a method according to the second aspect, carried out for manufacturing a fitted sheet according to the first aspect.
  • the invention relates to an assembly of a fitted sheet according to the first aspect and a mattress.
  • bed sheets in hotels and guest houses has always caused some problems until now. Upon arrival in a room, guests expect an impeccably made bed with perfectly ironed sheets. Traditionally, rectangular bed sheets are used for this. These can indeed be ironed very flat, and it is possible with such bed sheets to cover the top and side faces of a rectangular mattress without creases or folds.
  • Fitted sheets are also known which form a kind of cover for the mattress. These sheets are formed at their corners into a kind of pockets, pouches or sleeves with which they encompass the four corners of the mattress.
  • the pockets comprise elastic strips or bands, whereby at the same time the necessary tension for the sheet lying firmly on the mattress is obtained.
  • the fitted sheets it is possible to make a bed very quickly, but these fitted sheets cannot be ironed perfectly flat. Due to the elastic band, the fitted sheet always contracts slightly, so that the fitted sheet always has creases and folds after ironing. With such a fitted sheet it is therefore not possible to obtain an impeccably made bed with perfectly ironed bed sheets.
  • the elastic strips or bands are sewn to the fitted sheet with a zigzag pattern, so that the elastic strips or bands come into direct contact with hot surfaces of the ironing machine and quickly age, which again greatly limits the life of the fitted sheet.
  • NL6711305 describes a sheet for covering the top and side faces of a rectangular mattress, the sheet being characterised by diagonally oriented cuts or cut-outs at the four corners, where at two corners the formed flaps are releasably attachable to each other and the flaps at the other corners are sewn together to form mattress corner enveloping pockets.
  • Such a sheet has the following disadvantages.
  • these flaps comprise buttons and buttonholes or hooks and eyes or adhesive strips. Buttons, hooks and eyes at least prevent the sheet from being perfectly machine-ironed.
  • the mattress corner enveloping pockets on the other corners also prevent the sheet from being ironed perfectly flat. Sheets for hotels and guest houses are washed very often. Buttons, hooks and eyes and certainly adhesive strips can easily be damaged during the frequent washing and ironing, which means that the sheet must be repaired or replaced.
  • the flaps also prevent easy insertion of the sheet into an ironing machine. It is possible to hang or insert the sheet on a flap surface in both corners, but a second flap in the same corner will hang loose at that moment. When the sheet is pulled through the ironing machine, there is a real chance that the loose hanging or loose lying flap will be folded or get caught in the ironing machine, causing the flap to tear off.
  • the sheet covers only the top and side faces. In case of moving during sleep, the sheet may well not stay in place and no longer cover the mattress. This is not acceptable for a sheet in a hotel or guest house.
  • EP 1 544 334 describes a system for identifying bed sheets.
  • the present invention aims to solve at least some of the above problems or drawbacks.
  • the present invention relates to a fitted sheet according to claim 1.
  • the great advantage of such a fitted sheet is that it comprises mattress corner enveloping pockets at the foot end, wherein the pockets comprise an elastic band and a mattress head enveloping pocket at the head end.
  • the fitted sheet is very easy to pull over the mattress at the foot end of a mattress thanks to the mattress corner enveloping pockets.
  • the fitted sheet is stretched on the mattress by the elastic band.
  • the fitted sheet is just as easy to pull over the mattress thanks to the mattress head enveloping pocket.
  • the elastic band at the foot end ensures that the mattress head enveloping pocket is sufficiently stretched over the mattress head end. Edge parts of the mattress head enveloping pocket are simply folded under the mattress, making the fitted sheet look like a traditional bed sheet to a hotel or guest house guest.
  • the fitted sheet is substantially flat at the head end, so that it fits into the clamps of an ironing machine on this side and can be perfectly machine-ironed.
  • the fitted sheet is passed through the ironing machine from the head end.
  • the foot end follows smoothly through the ironing machine.
  • the fitted sheet is not damaged by the ironing and therefore has a longer lifespan compared to a fitted sheet according to the prior art. Possible creases and folds at the foot end are hidden by other blankets or sheets. Because the fitted sheet according to the current invention is ironed perfectly flat over a substantial part, the fitted sheet can be folded compactly, so that less space is required during transport and handling. The use of cardboard is unnecessary.
  • the enveloping pockets at the foot end and head end ensure that the fitted sheet cannot come loose due to the movements of a sleeper, so that the mattress is no longer covered.
  • a fitted sheet according to the invention it is possible to obtain an impeccably made bed quickly and with simple operations, just as with a traditional bed sheet, wherein the fitted sheet remains in place on the mattress even during movements of a sleeper.
  • a particular preferred embodiment of the invention relates to a device according to claim 4.
  • closed rectangles are sewn in corners at the head end of the fitted sheet. These rectangles are located in a part of the fitted sheet that is folded along and under the mattress. Due to these closed rectangles at the head end, the mattress head enveloping pocket is narrower and the fitted sheet at the head end is automatically centred around the longitudinal axis, further simplifying the making of the bed.
  • the present invention relates to a method according to claim 12.
  • This method has the advantage, among other things, that a fitted sheet according to the present invention is obtained from a traditional rectangular piece of fabric in a limited number of simple steps.
  • the present invention relates to a method according to the second aspect, performed to manufacture a fitted sheet according to the first aspect.
  • the invention relates to an assembly of a fitted sheet according to the first aspect with a mattress.
  • 'a' and 'the' refer to both the singular and the plural, unless the context presupposes otherwise.
  • 'a segment' means one or more segments.
  • Quoting numerical intervals by endpoints comprises all integers, fractions and/or real numbers between the endpoints, these endpoints included.
  • a stitched seam means a seam between two adjacent or stacked pieces of fabric sewn together.
  • a 'pocket', 'pouch' or 'sleeve' herein is meant an enclosure for wholly or partially containing and enclosing a corner, head end or a foot end of a mattress.
  • the invention in a first aspect, relates to a fitted sheet for covering the top and the side faces of a rectangular mattress.
  • the fitted sheet comprises a rectangular piece of fabric, the fitted sheet comprising a head end and a foot end, the rectangular piece of fabric being sewn together at two corners at the foot end to form mattress corner enveloping pockets, the pockets comprising an elastic band and wherein the rectangular piece of fabric at the head end is partially folded double in the direction of the foot end, the double folded portion being sewn together to form a mattress head enveloping pocket.
  • the fitted sheet comprises a rectangular piece of fabric.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric has a width of at least 90 cm and at most 380 cm, preferably at least 100 cm and at most 370 cm, and more preferably at least 105 cm and at most 365 cm.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric preferably has a width of 110 cm, 180 cm, 250 cm, 260 cm, 290 cm, 310 cm or 360 cm.
  • a width to manufacture a fitted sheet according to the present invention from the rectangular piece of fabric for mattresses with a width of 60 cm to 220 cm and a height of 8 cm to 40 cm.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric is wide enough to cover the top face and the side faces in the longitudinal direction of a rectangular mattress for mattresses up to 40 cm in height, where part of the fitted sheet is folded at edges under the mattress. That part of the fitted sheet is folded under the mattress over a distance of at least 5 cm, measured perpendicular to the edge of the mattress.
  • a shrinkage in the width direction of the rectangular piece of fabric is taken into account. This shrinkage in the width direction is the result of a number of initial washes of the fitted sheet.
  • the width direction shrinkage is at most 25%, preferably at most 20%, and even more preferably at most 15%. It is clear to a person skilled in the technical field of the invention that the width of the rectangular piece of fabric should be widened according to the width of the mattress.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric has a length of at least 135 cm and at most 380 cm, preferably at least 145 cm and at most 370 cm, even more preferably at least 150 cm and at most 365 cm. At this length it is possible to manufacture a fitted sheet according to the present invention from the rectangular piece of fabric for mattresses with a length of 100 cm to 240 cm and with a height of 8 cm to 40 cm.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric is long enough to cover the top face and the side faces in the transverse direction of a rectangular mattress for mattresses up to 40 cm in height, where part of the fitted sheet is folded at edges under the mattress. That part of the fitted sheet is folded under the mattress over a distance of at least 5 cm, measured perpendicular to the edge of the mattress.
  • a shrinkage in the longitudinal direction of the rectangular piece of fabric is taken into account.
  • This shrinkage in the longitudinal direction is the result of a number of initial washes of the fitted sheet.
  • the longitudinal shrinkage is at most 21%, preferably at most 16%, and even more preferably at most 11%. It is clear to a person skilled in the technical field of the invention that the length of the rectangular piece of fabric should be extended according to the length of the mattress.
  • the fitted sheet comprises a head end and a foot end.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric is sewn together at two corners at the foot end to form mattress corner enveloping pockets, the pockets comprising an elastic band.
  • the mattress corner enveloping pockets are formed by folding the rectangular piece of fabric at the foot end three times, with a first fold being parallel to a first edge of the rectangular fabric piece at the foot end, the second fold being parallel to a second edge of the rectangular fabric piece transverse to said first edge at the foot end, and the third fold being parallel to a third edge of the rectangular piece of fabric, opposite said second edge.
  • the formed pockets are suitable for sliding over corners at the foot end of a mattress, so that the top side and the side faces of the mattress are covered by the fitted sheet.
  • the positioning of the pockets in the corners at the foot end is advantageous to quickly and easily place the fitted sheet correctly in the right place on top of the mattress.
  • the elastic band is advantageous for keeping the mattress corner enveloping pockets in place, so that the fitted sheet does not get out of place due to movements of a sleeper.
  • the elastic band is also advantageous for automatically centring the fitted sheet around the longitudinal axis of a mattress because the mattress corner enveloping pockets are subject to a pulling force in each other's direction. Due to the elastic band, the fitted sheet cannot be ironed at the foot end without creases and folds. These creases and folds are covered by other blankets and sheets, so this is not disadvantageous.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric is folded at the head end partly in the direction of the foot end.
  • the folded portion is sewn together to form a mattress head enveloping pocket.
  • the mattress head enveloping pocket is suitable for easy placement over the mattress head end, so that the top and side faces of the mattress are covered by the fitted sheet.
  • the fitted sheet is folded under the mattress from the longitudinal edges of the mattress. This creates a made-up bed at the head end, similar to traditional rectangular bed sheets.
  • the mattress head enveloping pocket does not comprise an elastic band.
  • the fitted sheet is substantially flat at the head end, so that it fits in clamps of an ironing machine on this side and can be machine-ironed perfectly flat, which also ensures that an impeccably made bed can be obtained at the head end.
  • the fitted sheet is passed through the ironing machine from the head end.
  • the foot end follows smoothly through the ironing machine.
  • the fitted sheet is not damaged by the ironing and therefore has a longer lifespan compared to a fitted sheet according to the prior art.
  • the fitted sheet according to the current invention is ironed perfectly flat over a substantial part, the fitted sheet can be folded compactly, so that less space is required during transport and handling.
  • the use of cardboard on which the fitted sheet is stretched to prevent the fitted sheet from bulging during transport is superfluous.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric at the head end is folded over a distance of at least 15 cm in the direction of the foot end.
  • a mattress head enveloping pocket is obtained with a depth of at least 15 cm. This is advantageous for keeping the fitted sheet firmly in place.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric is folded over a distance of at most 45 cm, preferably at most 40 cm. This provides a mattress head enveloping pocket with a depth of at most 45 cm. This is sufficient for mattresses up to a height of 40 cm.
  • a non-limiting example concerns folding over a distance of 17 cm with a minimum length of 154 cm for the rectangular piece of fabric, wherein with a mattress with a length of 100 cm and a height of 8 cm it is possible to envelop the top, bottom and side walls of the mattress, with the mattress head enveloping pocket, at least over a length of 5 cm from the head end, while the mattress corner enveloping pockets at the foot end envelop the mattress over a length of at least 5 cm at the top, bottom and side walls.
  • the fitted sheet overlaps enough on the underside of the mattress to remain firmly in place.
  • the mattress head enveloping pocket comprises coloured stitching.
  • the coloured stitching is an indication of the width of a mattress for which the fitted sheet is suitable. This is advantageous for quickly finding a suitable fitted sheet for a mattress.
  • the folded portion of the rectangular piece of fabric is sewn together at corners of the head end to form closed rectangles, one side of a rectangle having a length of at least 15 cm and the mattress head enveloping pocket having a width of at least 70 cm and maximum 300 cm.
  • Sewing together the folded portion of the rectangular piece of fabric in the corners of the head end is advantageous for automatically centring the fitted sheet about the longitudinal axis of a mattress.
  • a mattress head enveloping pocket Between the closed rectangles lies a mattress head enveloping pocket, the width of the mattress head enveloping pocket being narrower than the width of the fitted sheet.
  • the closed rectangles are preferably the same.
  • the mattress head enveloping pocket is therefore automatically centred around the longitudinal axis of a mattress, so that no attention has to be paid to positioning the fitted sheet at the head end when making the bed.
  • closed rectangles are stronger than two single stitched seams forming open rectangles.
  • One side of a closed rectangle has a length of at least 15 cm.
  • the mattress head enveloping pocket has a width of at least 70 cm and at most 300 cm.
  • the mattress head enveloping pocket preferably has a width of at least 75 cm and at most 295 cm. Within this range, dimensions can be determined which allow the top and side faces of a rectangular mattress with a width of 60 cm to 220 cm and a height of 8 cm to 40 cm to be covered with the fitted sheet according to the current invention.
  • the mattress head enveloping pocket has a width that is at least equal to the width of a mattress plus the height of the mattress.
  • the closed rectangles have a side that is at least equal to half the height of the mattress plus 5 cm, preferably plus 10 cm.
  • an isosceles triangle is cut out in the corners at the foot end of the rectangular piece of fabric, the equal legs lying along the edge of the rectangular piece of fabric and the length of the equal legs being at least 32 cm and at most 118 cm.
  • a minimum dimension of 32 cm for a mattress with a height of 8 cm provides a distance of 8 cm with the mattress corner enveloping pockets covering the underside of a mattress.
  • a length of 118 cm for a mattress with a height of 40 cm provides a distance of 19 cm with the mattress corner enveloping pockets covering the underside of a mattress.
  • a greater distance over which the mattress corner enveloping pockets cover the underside of a mattress, due to the already present elastic band, provides little additional improvement in holding the fitted sheet in place and reduces the simplicity with which the fitted sheet can be placed over a mattress because the mattress must be lifted over a greater distance.
  • the length of the fitted sheet from the head end to the foot end is at least 105 cm and at most 270 cm.
  • the length of the fitted sheet from the head end to the foot end is at least the length of a mattress plus an expected longitudinal shrinkage. As a result, a fitted sheet can still be placed on a mattress after a first number of washes.
  • a non-limiting example is a mattress with a length of 100 cm and a height of 8 cm. With a minimum length from the foot end to the head end of 105 cm and an expected longitudinal shrinkage of 5%, it is possible to cover the entire top of the mattress after a number of initial washes.
  • the length of the fitted sheet from the head end to the foot end is at least 110 cm and at most 267 cm.
  • an elastic band of a mattress corner enveloping pocket at the foot end is sewn into an enveloping seam, the seam being L-shaped as seen in the plane of the fitted sheet and a leg of the L-shape being at least 20 cm and at most 60 cm long.
  • Sewing the elastic band of a mattress corner enveloping pocket at the foot end into an enveloping seam is advantageous for protecting the elastic band from direct contact with an ironing device or ironing machine.
  • the enveloping seam remains moist for longer after washing, which is also advantageous to protect the elastic band from excessive heating during ironing.
  • the elastic band comprises natural or synthetic rubber, polyurethane (PU) or polybutylene terephthalate (PBT).
  • PU polyurethane
  • PBT polybutylene terephthalate
  • the enveloping seam is L-shaped. This is advantageous because it also causes the elastic band to exert a tensile force in the longitudinal direction of the fitted sheet, pulling the mattress head enveloping pocket on the underside of a mattress towards the centre of the mattress and thus holding it securely in place.
  • one leg of the L-shape and the elastic band sewn into it extends over a length of at least 20 cm, preferably at least 25 cm, and even more preferably at least 30 cm.
  • a leg longer than 60 cm does not substantially improve the gripping of the mattress head enveloping pocket and makes it more difficult to pull the fitted sheet around a mattress.
  • the elastic band of a first and a second mattress corner enveloping pocket is the same elastic band, and the two L-shaped enveloping seams form a U-shaped enveloping seam.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric comprises a woven fabric weighing at least 100 g/m2 and at most 200 g/m2.
  • a fitted sheet in a hotel or guest house is frequently washed and requires a minimum strength and therefore weight to avoid tearing.
  • a woven fabric is too thin and partly transparent, so that a mattress is not adequately covered.
  • many fitted sheets are moved and stacked every day in a hotel or guest house and it is advantageous to obtain a fitted sheet that is as light as possible.
  • woven fabrics weighing more than 200 g/m2 comprise thicker yarns, making a fitted sheet rough.
  • a suitable weight range for a fitted sheet comprising a woven fabric is at least 100 g/m2 and at most 200 g/m2, preferably at least 105 g/m2 and at most 195 g/m2, more preferably at least 110 g/m2 and at most 190 g/m2.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric comprises a knit fabric having a weight of at least 115 g/m2 and at most 180 g/m2.
  • a fitted sheet in a hotel or guest house is frequently washed and requires a minimum strength and therefore weight to avoid tearing.
  • a knit fabric is too thin and partly transparent, so that a mattress is not sufficiently covered.
  • many fitted sheets are moved and stacked every day in a hotel or guest house and it is advantageous to obtain a fitted sheet that is as light as possible.
  • knit fabrics weighing more than 180 g/m2 comprise thicker yarns, making a fitted sheet rough.
  • a suitable weight range for a fitted sheet comprising a knit fabric is at least 115 g/m2 and at most 180 g/m2, preferably at least 120 g/m2 and at most 175 g/m2, more preferably at least 125 g/m2 and at most 170 g/m2.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric comprises at least 40 wt% cotton and at most 60 wt% PES.
  • Fitted sheets for a hotel or guest house preferably have an expensive and high-quality appearance. The use of a minimal amount of cotton is recommended for this. On the other hand, a lot of fitted sheets are used in a hotel or guest house. It is advantageous to replace part of the cotton with cheaper synthetic fibres, such as polyester fibres (PES).
  • the rectangular piece of fabric comprises at least 40 wt% cotton and at most 60 wt% PES, preferably at least 50 wt% cotton and at most 50 wt% PES, more preferably at least 60 wt% cotton and at most 40 wt% PES and even more preferably at least 65 wt% cotton and at most 35 wt% PES.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric may comprise up to 15 wt% elastane (EL), preferably up to 10 wt%, and even more preferably up to 5 wt%.
  • Elastane is advantageous for obtaining a fitted sheet with elasticity, resulting in a fitted sheet with smaller dimensions being possible. This is advantageous because a smaller fitted sheet with elasticity stretches itself around a mattress and therefore remains firmly in place.
  • a fitted sheet with a larger proportion of elastane is more difficult to iron because the fitted sheet contracts by itself due to the elastane.
  • the invention in a second aspect, relates to a method for manufacturing a fitted sheet for covering the top and side faces of a rectangular mattress.
  • the method comprises the step of providing a rectangular piece of fabric, the method comprising the additional steps of:
  • a rectangular piece of fabric is provided.

  • the rectangular piece of fabric has a width of at least 90 cm and at most 380 cm, preferably at least 100 cm and at most 370 cm, and more preferably at least 105 cm and at most 370 cm.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric is sewn together in two corners which are opposite each other in the transverse direction of the rectangular piece of fabric to form mattress corner enveloping pockets.
  • a foot end is hereby formed.
  • An elastic band is sewn into the mattress corner enveloping pockets.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric is partially folded in half on a side opposite the foot end to form a head end.
  • the folded portion is sewn together to form a mattress head enveloping pocket.
  • the mattress head enveloping pocket is suitable for easy sliding over the mattress head end, so that the top and side faces of the mattress are covered by the fitted sheet.
  • the fitted sheet is folded under the mattress along edges in the longitudinal direction of the mattress.

  • the width of the rectangular piece of fabric is determined by the width of a mattress, plus an expected stretch in the width direction, plus twice the height of the mattress plus 20 cm. This number is rounded off to the next decimal.
  • the length of the fitted sheet from the head end to the foot end is equal to the length of a mattress plus an expected longitudinal stretch.
  • the method comprises the additional step of sewing together the folded portion of the rectangular piece of fabric in corners of the head end into closed rectangles, one side of a rectangle having a length of at least 15 cm and the mattress head enveloping pocket having a width of at least 70 cm and a maximum of 300 cm.
  • the folded part is sewn together by means of at least three stitched seams.
  • a first stitched seam starts from a corner at the head end of the fitted sheet and runs parallel to an edge along the length of the fitted sheet for a distance of at least 15 cm.
  • a second stitched seam starts from the end point of the first stitched seam and runs transverse to the first stitched seam and parallel to the head end for a length of at least 15 cm.
  • a third stitched seam runs from the end point of the second stitched seam to the head end of the fitted sheet, parallel to the first stitched seam and with the same length of the first stitched seam.

  • the length of the equal legs is determined by the width of the rectangular piece of fabric minus a width equal to the width of a mattress plus an expected stretch in the width direction.
  • the method of sewing the mattress corner enveloping pockets comprises the additional step of folding the rectangular piece of fabric three times over a distance of at least 16 cm and at most 59 cm, with a first fold being parallel to a first edge of the rectangular fabric piece at the foot end, the second fold being parallel to a second edge of the rectangular fabric piece transverse to said first edge at the foot end, and the third fold being parallel to a third edge of the rectangular piece of fabric, opposite said second edge.
  • mattress corner enveloping pockets are easily created in two corners at the foot end of the fitted sheet. It is also advantageous that the two mattress corner enveloping pockets are contiguous in this way and enclose not only the corners, but the entire foot end of a mattress, so that the fitted sheet remains in place better.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric is folded over a distance of at least 16 cm and at most 59 cm.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric is preferably folded three times over the same distance.
  • a minimum dimension of 16 cm for a mattress with a height of 8 cm provides a distance of 8 cm with the mattress corner enveloping pockets covering the underside of a mattress. Due to the already present elastic band, folding over a distance greater than 59 cm provides little further improvement in holding the fitted sheet in place and reduces the simplicity with which the fitted sheet can be placed over a mattress.
  • the elastic band at the foot end is sewn into an enveloping seam.
  • Sewing the elastic band at the foot end into an enveloping seam is advantageous for protecting the elastic band from direct contact with an ironing device or ironing machine.
  • the enveloping seam remains moist for longer after washing, which is also advantageous to protect the elastic band from excessive heating during ironing.
  • the invention relates to a method according to the second aspect, performed to manufacture a fitted sheet according to the first aspect.
  • the invention relates to an assembly of a fitted sheet according to the first aspect with a mattress.
  • Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of a rectangular piece of fabric for processing into a fitted sheet according to an embodiment of the present invention, with the main folding and cutting lines indicated thereon. The figure is not to scale.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric 1 has a first side where a head end 6 of the fitted sheet will be formed. For this, the rectangular piece of fabric 1 is folded in half along a folding line 2.
  • the folding line 2 is parallel to the head end 6 and is at a distance of at least 15 cm from the head end 6.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric 1 has a second side where a foot end 7 of the fitted sheet will be formed.
  • two isosceles triangles 3 are cut off in the corners of the rectangular piece of fabric 1.
  • the equal legs of the isosceles triangles 3 lie along edges of the rectangular piece of fabric 1.
  • the cutting is done along the diagonal dashed lines from one edge of the rectangular piece of fabric to another adjacent edge.
  • the equal legs of the isosceles triangles are at least 32 cm and at most 118 cm long.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric 1 is folded over along three edges 4 after the two isosceles triangles 3 have been cut off.
  • a first fold is parallel to the foot end 7.
  • a second fold is transverse to the first fold and parallel to an edge of the rectangular piece of fabric 1.
  • a third fold is also transverse to the first fold and parallel to an edge of the rectangular piece of fabric 1 and parallel to the second fold.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric 1 is folded over a distance of at least 16 cm and at most 59 cm.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric 1 is folded over three times the same distance.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric is folded over three times the same distance, the distance being equal to one half the length of an equal leg of the isosceles triangles 3. In this way sloping sides, which are formed in the original rectangular piece of fabric 1 by cutting off the isosceles triangles 3, are folded in half around their centre point after being folded.
  • Figure 2 shows a schematic bottom view of a fitted sheet according to an embodiment of the present invention. The figure is not to scale.
  • the fitted sheet 8 is obtained by further processing of the rectangular piece of fabric 1 from Figure 1 .
  • the hatched parts of the fitted sheet 8 indicate parts of the rectangular piece of fabric 1 which have come to lie from the top to the bottom by folding over.
  • the underside 12 of the fitted sheet 8 is the side that is placed on the top of a rectangular mattress.
  • Two equal closed squares 10 are sewn into the folded part at the head end 6.
  • the squares have a side of at least 15 cm.
  • the dashed lines indicate stitched seams that form the closed squares.
  • Four stitched seams per square are used in this figure.
  • At least three stitched seams are required to form a closed square, as the squares 10 at the head end 6 are closed anyway.
  • Between the closed squares 10 is a mattress head enveloping pocket 9. Due to the closed squares 10, the mattress head enveloping pocket 9 is centred with respect to the longitudinal axis of the fitted sheet 8.
  • mattress corner enveloping pockets are formed by sewing together folded sloping sides 11, which result from cutting off the isosceles triangles 3 and the folding over.
  • the dashed lines around the folded sloping sides 11 symbolise the stitched seams.
  • An elastic band 13 is sewn into an enveloping seam at the edge of the mattress corner enveloping pockets.
  • the enveloping seam and the elastic band contained therein are U-shaped.
  • One leg of the U-shape is at least 20 cm and at most 60 cm long.
  • the coloured stitching 14 is an indication of the width of a mattress for which the fitted sheet is suitable.
  • Example 1 concerns a fitted sheet according to the present invention for a mattress with a width of 60 cm, a length of 100 cm and a height of 8 cm.
  • the fitted sheet is made from a rectangular piece of fabric with a width of 110 cm and a length of 154 cm.
  • the width of the rectangular piece of fabric is determined by the width of the mattress, plus an expected stretch of 15% in the width direction, plus twice the height of the mattress plus 20 cm. This number is rounded off to the next decimal.
  • Isosceles triangles are cut off in the two corners at the foot end.
  • the two isosceles triangles have the same dimensions in both corners.
  • the equal legs of the isosceles triangles lie at the edge of the rectangular piece of fabric.
  • the equal legs are 41 cm long.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric is folded at the foot end three times an equal distance of 20.5 cm and the folded sloping sides, created by the cutting off of the isosceles triangles and the folding, are sewn together.
  • the fitted sheet is 69 cm wide at the foot end.
  • the length of the equal legs is determined by the width of the rectangular piece of fabric minus a width equal to the width of the mattress plus an expected stretch of 15% in the width direction.
  • the length of the fitted sheet from head to foot is 111 cm. This is equal to the length of the mattress plus an expected longitudinal stretch of 11%.
  • Example 2 concerns a fitted sheet according to the present invention for a mattress with a width of 90 cm, a length of 200 cm and a height of 25 cm.
  • the fitted sheet is made from a rectangular piece of fabric with a width of 180 cm and a length of 291 cm.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric is folded over a length of 25.5 cm.
  • closed squares with a side measuring 25.5 cm are sewn in the two corners at the head end.
  • a mattress head enveloping pocket with a depth of 25.5 cm and a width of 129 cm is formed.
  • the fitted sheet is 180 cm wide at the head end.
  • Isosceles triangles are cut off in the two corners at the foot end.
  • the two isosceles triangles have the same dimensions in both corners.
  • the equal legs of the isosceles triangles lie at the edge of the rectangular piece of fabric.

  • the rectangular piece of fabric is folded at the foot end three times an equal distance of 38 cm and the folded sloping sides, created by the cutting off of the isosceles triangles and the folding, are sewn together.
  • the fitted sheet is 104 cm wide at the foot end.
  • the length of the fitted sheet from head to foot is 222 cm.
  • Example 3 concerns a fitted sheet according to the present invention for a mattress with a width of 180 cm, a length of 200 cm and a height of 28 cm.
  • the fitted sheet is made from a rectangular piece of fabric with a width of 290 cm and a length of 297 cm.
  • the rectangular piece of fabric is folded over a length of 27.5 cm.
  • closed squares with a long side measuring 27.5 cm are sewn in the two corners at the head end.
  • a mattress head enveloping pocket with a depth of 27.5 cm and a width of 235 cm is formed.
  • the fitted sheet is 290 cm wide at the head end.
  • Isosceles triangles are cut off in the two corners at the foot end.
  • the two isosceles triangles have the same dimensions in both corners.
