Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a dishwasher, in particular to a dishwasher having an agitator and a spray arm rotatably attached to the agitator so as to improve the washing performance of the dishwasher.
  • the items placed on to the dishwasher drawers close or on to the comer regions of a washing tub may not be cleaned well due to the washing tubs generally having a rectangular cross-section and the pivoting spray arms forming an annular washing area.
  • a water outlet is provided on to the agitator so as to eject the water horizontally thereby pushing the agitator and forcing it to rotate.
  • the agitator rotates on the base of the tub and pivots around an axis, created by the momentum of water sprayed through the hole.
  • the spray arm rotates about another axis offset from the axis of the agitator. By this, the end of the spray arm extends farther to the corner regions, enabling better cleaning of the items near the comer regions.
  • the water sprayed out of the agitator causes water pressure to drop. This necessitates utilization of a pump with higher energy consumption.
  • Another disadvantage of this embodiment is that the water required during washing and rinsing operation increases.
  • An objective of the present invention is to rotate the agitator and the spray arm about different axes so as to clean the dishes near comer regions and at the same time eliminating the need for nozzles opened on to the agitator, thereby decreasing the water consumption of the dishwasher.
  • the method realized to achieve the aim of the present invention and disclosed in the first claim and the dependent claims comprises a dishwasher having a body, having a tub wherein washing, rinsing and drying operations take place.
  • a water conduit that is used to transfer the water required for washing operations is protruding from the bottom of the tub and is fluidly connected to the agitator in a stationary axis.
  • a pump is used to pressurize the water and transfer it inside the agitator.
  • a spray arm is attached to the agitator and rotates about a moving vertical axis offset from the stationary axis, thereby the spray arm extends farther to the comer regions of the tub, enabling better cleaning of the dishes near the corner regions.
  • the spray arm is in fluid communication with the agitator, so that the water pumped inside the agitator passes through the agitator, spray arm and nozzles of the spray arm respectively.
  • the agitator has a base gear placed inside and concentrically with the agitator and has multiple fins around its circumference. Upon placing the base gear form-fittingly inside the agitator, a water channel between the base gear and the agitator is formed. The water pumped inside the agitator via the water conduit travels through the water channel, along the radius of the base gear and towards the fins. The fins, upon passage of the water in between, is forced to rotate about the stationary vertical axis.
  • the spray arm gear is rotatable placed on to the base gear and is fluidly connected with the water channel.
  • the water passing through the fins is then transferred towards the spray arm gear over the base gear.
  • a water duct is formed between the spray arm gear and the spray arm upon insertion of the spray arm gear into the spray arm, thereby the water is transferred to the spray arm.
  • Rotation of the base gear by passage of water in between the fins is transferred to the agitator, making the agitator turn about the stationary axis.
  • the spray arm has multiple nozzles provided along the rim of the spray arm so as to create momentum by spraying water to the inside of the tub, forcing it to rotate about the moving vertical axis with respect to the agitator.
  • the stationary vertical axis is different than the moving vertical axis and the moving vertical axis sweeps a trajectory having the stationary vertical axis extending through its center.
  • a major advantageous effect of using the agitator that does not have any nozzles or holes located around its rim is that the water pumped by the pump via the water conduit and inside the agitator is not sprayed to the tub so as to create a rotational force. As a result, the water is used solely for washing the dishes, decreasing the water consumption of the dishwasher.
  • Another advantageous effect is that the amount of water, even though the total amount may remain the same, to be pumped through the water conduit per unit time is decreased, thereby reducing the power consumption and capacity requirement of the pump.
  • the water duct is formed by the lugs protruding towards the spray arm.
  • Lugs are originated from the spray arm gear and are preferably in the shape of a rectangular prism.
  • the lugs and the spray arm gear are produced in one piece.
  • the lugs extend perpendicularly outwards from the moving vertical axis, multiple lugs being connected to each other along the moving vertical axis. Therefore, multiple water ducts are formed between the two consecutive lugs.
  • a central gear is placed concentrically and in a fixed manner on to the base gear.
  • the central gear is used to transfer rotational force to the spray arm gear.
  • the nozzles provided on to the spray arm is used to rotate the spray arm and therefore the spray arm gear.
  • it is required to establish a connection between the base gear and the spray arm gear.
  • the central gear is connected to the spray arm gear via a plurality of intermediary gears.
  • the total number of gears, including the central gear and the spray arm gear, must be an odd number so as to rotate the spray arm in the opposite direction with respect to the agitator. Therefore, the comers of the tub are sprayed effectively with water and cleaning agent sprayed through the spray arm.
  • the agitator is flooded with water only during washing and rinsing operations. Due to intricate structure the gears have, small particles tend to get in between the gears obstructing the operation of the agitator and therefore that of the spray arm.
  • the control unit discharges the water remaining inside the agitator, preventing sedimentation of waste particles around the gears. Additionally, the control unit flushes the agitator and therefore the spray arm with fresh water, pumped through the water inlet to clean the insides of both the agitator and the spray arm.
  • the fins around the circumference of the base gear is configured to form an angle with the agitator that is between the 90° and 45° degrees but more specifically between 62° and 73° degrees.
  • the spray arm is configured to be attached on to the spray arm gear in a specific click-fit orientation so as to provide a robust assembly.
  • the drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in the claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.

  • the present invention relates to a dishwasher (1) comprising; a body (2), a tub (3) inside the body (2) wherein the washing operation takes place, a water conduit (4) whereby the water to be used in washing operation is transferred to the tub (3), an agitator (5) fluidly connected to the water conduit (4) and wherein the agitator (5) is rotatable placed on to the base of the tub (3) around a stationary vertical axis, a spray arm (6) in fluid communication with the agitator (5) so as to spray the dishes with water, and wherein the spray arm (6) is rotatable placed on to the agitator (5) around a moving vertical axis, which upon rotation, rotates around the stationary vertical axis in a circular trajectory, a base gear (7), placed concentric with and inside the agitator (5), forming a water channel (8) in between the agitator (5) so as to divert the water coming from the water conduit (4) along the radius and towards the circumference of the base gear (7), whereon the passage of the water forces the base
  • the dishwasher (1) of the present invention comprises a spray arm gear (10), placed rotatable on to the base gear (7), is in fluid communication with the water channel (8) so as to transfer the water towards the spray arm (6) via at least one water duct (11) being formed upon insertion of the spray arm gear (10) inside the spray arm (6) in a water-tight manner.
  • the agitator (5) is fluidly connected with the water conduit (4), thereby the water entering the dishwasher (1) through a water inlet is transferred to the agitator (5).
  • the base gear (7) is placed inside the agitator (5) in a form-fitting way and the central axes of both the base gear (7) and the agitator (5) is aligned along the stationary vertical axis.
  • the base gear (7) has multiple fins (9) being placed consecutively along the circumference of the base gear (7).
  • the base gear (7) upon placing on to the agitator (5) forms the water channel (8) which is utilized to transfer the water entering inside the agitator (5) through the water conduit (4) and towards the fins (9). Passage of the water in between the fins (9) creates a driving force on the fins (9) which in turn is transferred to the base gear (7), rotating it around the stationary vertical axis. Afterwards, the water passes over the base gear (7) and reaches the spray arm gear (10), which projects upwards through a hole provided on to the agitator (5).
  • the spray arm (6) is attached on to the spray arm gear (10) via another hole provided on to the agitator (5) in a water tight manner.
  • the spray arm gear (10) Upon insertion of the spray arm gear (10) inside the spray arm (6) at least one water duct (11) is formed between the spray arm (6) and the spray arm gear (10) thereby transfer of the water entering the agitator (5) through the water conduit (4) towards the nozzles provided along the spray arm (6) is achieved in a water tight manner. Therefore, the rotation of the agitator (5) is achieved without having to provide a hole on the agitator (5) which upon spraying the water inside the agitator (5) helps create momentum, forcing the agitator (5) to rotate around the stationary vertical axis.
  • a major advantageous effect of the present invention is that the necessity of providing a hole on the agitator (5) so as to create rotation is eliminated. As a result of this, the amount of water necessary to rotate both the agitator (5) and the spray arm (6) is decreased, thereby greatly decreasing the water and the energy consumption of the dishwasher (1).
  • the water duct (11) is formed by at least a lug (12) protruding towards the spray arm (6) by extending along and away from the moving vertical axis to contact the spray arm (6) form fittingly upon insertion of the spray arm gear (10) inside the spray arm (6).
  • Multiple lugs (12) are formed on the surface of the spray arm gear (10) pointing towards the spray arm (6).
  • the lugs (12) are formed in the shape of a rectangular prism, first longitudinal face being attached to the spray arm gear (10) and second neighboring longitudinal face being connected to the second neighboring longitudinal face of another lug (12) along the moving vertical axis.
  • Multiple lugs (12) are connected symmetrically around the moving vertical axis forming congruent angles in between.
  • the angle formed between two lugs (12), three lugs (12) or four lugs (12) are, 180 degrees, 120 degrees and 90 degrees respectively. Therefore, a wide water duct (11) is formed between two adjacent lugs (12) upon insertion of the spray arm gear (10) inside the spray arm (6).
  • a central gear (13) is placed concentrically and in a fixed manner on to the base gear (7).
  • the central gear (13) is utilized so as to transfer torque created by the passage of water through the fins (9) provided around the circumference of the base gear (7). Passage of water via the spray arm gear (10) to the spray arm (6) helps the spray arm (6) creates a torque as the water exit the nozzles provided at the edges of the spray arm (6).
  • the torque created by the momentum of the water sprayed through the nozzles along with the torque transferred to the spray arm gear (10) by the central gear (13) creates a water jet effect thereby increasing the cleaning efficiency of the dishwasher (1).
  • the spray arm gear (10) is coupled to the central gear (13) via an odd number of intermediary gear (14).
  • Use of odd number of gears, including the central gear (13) and the spray arm gear (10), ensures that the spray arm (6) and the agitator (5) rotates in opposite directions.
  • the corners of the tub (3) are sprayed with water mixed with cleaning agent, thereby improving cleaning capacity and quality of the dishwasher (1).
  • Another advantageous effect of using the intermediary gear (14) is that the number of rotations of the spray arm gear (10) can be adjusted by using double layer gear as the intermediary gear (14). Therefore, higher number of rotations per unit time can be achieved, increasing the cleaning capacity of the dishwasher (1).
  • the agitator (5) is flooded with water during washing and rinsing operations.
  • the water inside the agitator (5) contain particles separated from washed dishes which may cause hygiene related problems. Another problem is that the particles may get stuck in between the gears. Therefore the agitator (5) is flooded with water only during washing and rinsing operations so as to prevent malfunctions and hygiene problems.
  • the water inside the agitator (5) is discharged at the end of the washing and rinsing operation.
  • the water remaining inside the agitator (5) after washing and rinsing operations may cause hygiene related problems therefore has to be removed from the agitator.
  • the dishwasher comprises a control unit pumping clean water from the water inlet of the dishwasher (1) so as to clean and sanitize the inside of the agitator (5) and the spray arm (6).
  • the angle between the fins (9) and the agitator (5) is configured to be between 45 and 90 degrees but more specifically between 62 and 73 degrees.
  • the fins (9) help create the torque required by the base gear (7) to drive the agitator (5) and consequently the spray arm (6) and the spray arm gear (10).
  • the base gear (7) having the fins with different angles can be provided so as to utilize the water pressure efficiently.
  • the spray arm gear (10) is protruding upwards and in a water tight manner through an opening (13) provided on to the agitator (5).
  • the spray arm gear (10) is protruding upwards so as to attach the spray arm (6) easily.
  • the spray arm gear (10) is protruding and connected with the spray arm (6) in a water tight manner so that the water pressure inside the agitator (5) is utilized with minimum loss.
  • the spray arm (5) is configured to be engaged and mounted on to the spray arm gear (10) in a specific click-fit orientation.
  • the spray arm (5) is rotating with a high angular velocity to ensure effective cleaning of the dishes.
  • the connection between the spray arm (5) and the spray arm gear (10) is in the form of a click-fit orientation.
  • the click-fit orientation is resistant to disengagement of the spray arm (5) from the spray arm gear (10).
  • a major advantageous effect of the present invention is that the use of the base gear (7) as a turbine, powered by the flow of wash water eliminates the need for opening a hole or a nozzle on to the agitator (5) to supply it with momentum required for the agitator (5) to rotate around its axis. Therefore, the water entering the agitator (5) is used for washing and agitating the agitator (5) and the spray arm (6) decreasing the water and energy consumption of the dishwasher (1).
