Definitions
- the present invention belongs to the field of ammunition used in firearms and relates more particularly to the field of multiple projectile cartridges used for hunting or recreational shooting.
- It relates to a part intended to be placed in a cartridge to separate the explosive charge from the shot, comprising a pad inserted in a sheath which together form a bucket fill, which is made of environmentally friendly materials.
- rifle cartridges are formed by a cylindrical casing reinforced at the base by a metal base, generally made of brass.
- the socket formerly made of cardboard, is today most often formed from a plastic tube.
- the cartridges contain on the one hand an explosive charge (that is to say powder) which is in contact with a primer, and on the other hand a set of projectiles in the form of shot which persists in calling lead even if now less polluting materials are used to make them.
- the explosive charge and the pellets are separated by a wedging device called a flock.
- the role of the flock is essential since it transmits to the seals the energy induced by the thrust of the combustion gases of the powder, an effective thrust having to be regular and without loss of energy.
- the flock must meet several qualities. It must above all ensure sealing by opposing the passage of hot gases under pressure to prevent the dispersion of gases during the course of the shot in the barrel of the weapon as soon as it has left the case. This limits the energy loss that results and also prevents the fusion of several pellets in clusters, which represents a high danger because of the distance they travel in the barrel.
- the infiltration of combustion gases is likely to create disturbances in the sheaf of pellets.
- the fill must be compressible and elastic to absorb the shock produced by the sudden ignition of the powder.
- the wad also makes it possible to clean the barrel light with each shot and ensures uniform thrust on the base of the projectiles.
- a fatty wadding made of a layer of felt or cork, which we put in cardboard sleeves over the powder and then covered with lead pellets. The wad was lubricated to seal and limit the frictional forces against the barrel.
- Two protective washers for example made of cardboard, avoided direct contact of the powder and the pellets with the fatty fill.
- the sleeve is made of plastic while the fatty fill has been replaced by a fill with cup, or fluff with skirt, also made of plastic.
- the bottom of the bucket forms a transverse element separating the shot from the powder.
- the skirt extends in a corolla forward in the socket and contains the sinkers. When fired, the flock is expelled at the same time as the shot, avoiding the deformation of the lead balls due to friction in the core of the barrel, and thereby protecting the barrel against wear and deposit of lead.
- Most bucket fillers also have a rear skirt serving as a shutter for the compartment containing the powder and also acting as a shock absorber.
- the document WO2014 / 201278 describes an ammunition provided with a bucket fill made in polyhydroxyalkanoate (biodegradable polyester) of density greater than one, able to degrade by forming small particles presumed harmless, provided that it remains in water. There too, it is not certain that the lost stuffs are in the adequate conditions to be eliminated. It is added that the use of petroleum derivatives to manufacture these cartridges only displaces the problems of environmental pollution. Another answer consists in using as raw materials biodegradable thermoplastic polymers of vegetable origin.
- the cartridges described in application no. WO2016 / 174276 include polymers based on polylactic acid or polycaprolactone. These materials known for their medical applications, in particular in osteoplasty, degrade in several months. They are also too expensive for the intended use here.
- the purpose of the present invention is to overcome the above-mentioned drawbacks, by providing a biodegradable intermediate piece acting as a wad for cartridges with multiple projectiles.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a part made of materials of natural origin, not using synthetic raw materials.
- Another object of the invention is to offer such an intermediate part which has mechanical and ballistic characteristics at least as effective as cartridges equipped with conventional skirt wads. More specifically, it is sought to replace conventional bucket fillers with a part which degrades in the surrounding environment by the effect of ambient humidity, in three or four weeks, or even in a few days, without its functionality before use being impacted. Such a part should be simple to manufacture and inexpensive.
- Another aspect of the invention relates to cartridges equipped with such an intermediate part, these cartridges being intended for hunting medium-sized animals, clay pigeon shooting or other sporting and leisure activities in which the weapon has a barrel with a smooth core.
- the subject of the invention is an intermediate piece intended to be placed in the cartridge case to separate the explosive charge and the shot, said piece comprising a cylindrical sheath of external diameter adapted to be inserted in sliding sliding in the cartridge case, said sleeve having a front part whose end is open, capable of containing said shot, and a rear part containing a cylindrical pad whose rear face is flush with the end of the rear part of the sleeve, said piece intermediate consisting of at least 95% by weight of biodegradable materials.
- the parts intended to be placed in the cartridge to be oriented towards the muzzle of the barrel of the weapon will be designated as located in "front”, while the parts designated as “rear” will be those to be placed towards the bottom of the barrel.
- the intermediate part its rear part is close to the explosive charge, its front part being on the side of the shot.
- shot and “lead” are used interchangeably to designate the grains of the offensive charge, even if more and more often they are chemically free of lead.
- the intermediate piece according to the invention comprises a cylindrical sheath with an external diameter suitable for sliding sliding insertion in the cartridge case.
- the cylindrical sheath thus takes the form of a tube whose core is delimited by the internal face.
- the external face of this tube is intended to be in contact with the internal face of the cartridge case, itself conventionally cylindrical.
- the intermediate piece according to the invention comprises a cylindrical tampon which is inserted into the sheath and of which it completely covers the rear part, a base of the cylindrical tampon flush with the rear end of the sheath, so that said base of the tampon coincides with the end of the sheath.
- the buffer constitutes a device for wedging between the explosive charge and the pellets, thereby playing the role of a wad, in a manner comparable to the fatty wads of traditional weapons. It differs from it, however, in that it is not greased to ensure sealing.
- the sheath's role is to hold the tampon by its rear part and to contain the pellets in its front part.
- the front part of the sheath thus constitutes a skirt which gives the intermediate piece the advantages of the bucket fillers mentioned above.
- the sheath forming a skirt occupies in its diameter the free space inside the socket, with a clearance allowing its introduction in sliding sliding.
- the intermediate piece according to the invention thus combines the qualities of traditional and modern fillers. It also offers unequaled environmental quality insofar as the materials used to manufacture it can degrade or decompose naturally for at least 95% of their weight (or quite strictly 95% of their mass).
- the biodegradable character is defined as the capacity of materials to transform under the action of living organisms into elements devoid of harmful effect for the natural environment. Natural decomposition refers to the ability of materials to divide under the effect of climatic conditions (water, light, frost, ...) into fragments of matter devoid of harmful effects for the natural environment. Fragments are particles that can range in size from less than a millimeter to a few millimeters, for example from 0.5 mm to 3 mm.
- the organic matter which constitutes the material can be rapidly converted into carbon dioxide, methane, water and biomass by the action of microorganisms.
- the material can disintegrate leaving fragments that contain only natural substances, which are present elsewhere in nature, as is the case with wood or animal hair.
- the biodegradable or decomposable character is appreciated in a range of temperatures which may prevail in temperate zones, lying within a range of average daily temperatures. ranging from + 5 ° C to + 35 ° C. A hunter practicing in the countryside, for example in Europe, is liable to encounter such temperatures and can fire the cartridges equipped with the intermediate piece according to the invention without contaminating the natural spaces.
- the sheath is formed from at least 95% by weight of biodegradable materials. Ideally, we choose a material degrading at least 98%, or even completely, in a few weeks or even a few days.
- the sheath consists of a cardboard tube with a thickness ranging from 0.4 mm to 1 mm.
- the tampon is formed from at least 95% of biodegradable materials, natural decomposable materials or an assembly of these.
- the remaining fraction is preferably made of biodegradable materials so that the buffer does not create residual pollution of the surrounding environment.
- Different materials of plant or animal origin may be suitable to ensure the wedging between the powder and the pellets.
- the tampon comprises one or more materials chosen from: cork, wood fibers, cardboard, felt.
- the tampon can be produced in a single block of material, cut from a mass.
- Materials such as felts made by compression and crushing of animal fibers can be cut into cylindrical sections of adequate dimensions to be introduced into the sheath. They in fact constitute a block of homogeneous material as can be a block of cork or wood.
- cylindrical slices or washers of wood, cork, ..., of lesser thickness and stack them until a buffer of adequate height is obtained.
- the pad is then formed of superimposed slices (glued together or not), made of the same material or of different materials which can be alternated.
- the tampon can be formed from a block of a single material, or overlapping slices of the same material or different materials.
- the tampon can be formed from a block of cork, cut out with a cookie cutter.
- the assembly of the slices can be done during the introduction into the sheath where they will be held against each other.
- the assembly can also be done beforehand, by gluing using a natural adhesive substance.
- the adhesive power of the glue used can be moderate insofar as it suffices to keep the slices integral with each other until they are introduced into the sheath which will then ensure their cohesion.
- One can for example use a biodegradable adhesive based on casein, starch or cellulose.
- the tampon can be formed from one or more agglomerated materials, that is to say fragments of the chosen material or materials, which are amalgamated by a binder representing less than 1 % of total mass.
- the pad is formed from amalgamated cork grains.
- the cork grains result from the grinding of cork into particles which can have various particle sizes, for example from 0.5 mm to 3 mm.
- the binder can be chosen from the many known substances, of vegetable or animal origin, such as for example vegetable gums, starches, latex, vegetable resins, milk casein, celluloses, or the like.
- the binder can also be chosen from the thermoplastic resins commonly used in the manufacture of agglomerated corks. It is preferable to use a biodegradable binder, which also acts as an adhesive. Note that since the binder generally represents less than 1% of the mass of agglomerated cork, this point is not critical.
- cork granules and the binder are mixed, poured into molds, heated, cooled and then removed from the mold.
- Such a buffer quickly disintegrates into cork granules by degradation of the organic binder which microorganisms are fond of.
- the subsequent microbiological decomposition of the cork grains does not produce toxic compounds, the only element released being carbon dioxide. This use of cork is all the more virtuous as it makes it possible to recover the waste from the manufacture of corks and to recycle used corks.
- the tampon can be held in the sheath by friction.
- the tampon has a diameter identical to the internal diameter of the sleeve, so that there is no play between them. Friction forces (or friction) greatly limit the movement of the tampon in the sleeve under the pressure of the discharge.
- the pad can be held in the sleeve both by friction and gluing. In the case where a cork pad and a cardboard sheath are used, it is recommended to stick the buffer to the sheath. Then preferably use a biodegradable adhesive, such as a starch-based adhesive, cellulose, casein or other.
- conventional bucket fillers have a rear skirt serving as a shutter for the compartment containing the powder and limiting the passage of pressurized gases between the filler and the sleeve at the time of firing.
- the intermediate piece according to the invention can also be provided at its rear end with an element reinforcing the seal.
- the rear face of the tampon is associated with a cup made of a biodegradable material, said cup having a bottom of diameter similar to the diameter of the sheath and a circular collar extending towards the rear in the extension of said sheath. In this way, the cup is attached to the rear of the intermediate piece, without entering the sheath, which avoids the risk of deformation thereof.
- It can be made of any material whose biodegradability is close to that of the sheath, for example cardboard.
- it can conveniently be manufactured from a cardboard washer of thickness ranging from 0.3 mm to 1 mm, stamped so as to drive a disc constituting the bottom, the peripheral part of the washer being raised to form the collar. The cup is then fixed against the accessible base of the flush buffer at the end of the sleeve, so that the collar extends backwards.
- the bottom of the cup can be fixed directly to the pad with an adhesive, preferably biodegradable, as described above.
- a rigid disc can be interposed between the bottom of the cup and the rear face of the pad.
- This rigid disc has a diameter equal to that of the sleeve taken at its outer face, so that its periphery is supported on the rear end of the circular sleeve.
- This arrangement has two main advantages. On the one hand, it facilitates assembly and centering of the cup at the rear of the sleeve. On the other hand, it prevents the risk that the cup sinks into the scabbard during propulsion. Although this risk is fairly low and harmless, it is a source of disappointment for the shooter.
- the disc is made of a rigid material of small thickness, for example 0.3 mm to 1 mm, preferably biodegradable. One can for example use the same cardboard as for the cup.
- the assembly associating the cup and the rear face of the tampon comprises a rigid intermediate disc whose periphery bears on the end of the rear part of the sheath.
- said cup and the intermediate disc when it is present are made of cardboard of thickness ranging from 0.3 mm to 1 mm and are fixed by gluing to the rear face of the pad.
- the powder is pressed into the socket by exerting a certain pressure, which will crush the collar. It then flares radially by adopting a frustoconical shape taking a marked support on the wall of the socket and playing the role of shutter. This avoids the loss of pressure when firing and a uniform thrust is obtained.
- the sheath can comprise notches extending longitudinally from the front end of the sheath towards the rear part of the sheath. These notches, generally two to four in number, are advantageously distributed equidistantly. They can extend to the level of the buffer (which is itself more or less long depending on the specific characteristics of the ammunition) without in principle exceeding half of said sheath. This arrangement allows an opening in corolla of the skirt and gives shape to the sheaf during the shooting.
- the notches can be cut out entirely or, according to an interesting embodiment of the invention, they can be in the form of partial precuts, for example of dotted perforations or of hollow non-traversing grooves on the inside face of the sheath, to get a thickness reduction. This produces a weakening of the sheath wall along the precut lines, which will tear under pressure when fired, the skirt then opening in a corolla to give shape to the sheaf of pellets.
- the sheath comprises equidistant notches extending longitudinally from the front end towards the rear part of said sheath, said notches being completely cut or in the form of partial precuts.
- the intermediate piece according to the invention can have variable dimensions depending on the diameter of the ammunition for which it is intended. It can also be adapted to the quantity and size of the pellets.
- the type of weapons concerned being the smooth-barreled weapons used mainly for hunting medium game or for balltrap, whose calibers range from 10 to 36, it is recommended to stay in certain proportions.
- the sheath has a length ranging from 35 mm to 45 mm, while the tampon has a length which can range from 3 mm to 20 mm.
- a 40 mm long sheath is recommended for 12 gauge cartridges, with a pad 10 to 15 mm long, depending on the shot chosen.
- the intermediate piece as defined above advantageously replaces a conventional bucket fill because it allows not only not to generate waste polluting nature, but also to offer an unequaled quality of shooting. It turned out in fact that it is capable of efficiently transmitting to the sinkers the energy induced by the pressure of the combustion gases of the powder, ensuring a regular thrust and without loss of energy. It also appeared that the cartridges equipped with such an intermediate part can be stored without damage under the usual conditions, namely in their storage box, protected from moisture.
- a cartridge for a smooth-barreled rifle comprising i) a generally cylindrical casing, the rear part of which is mounted in a metal base, ii) an explosive charge in contact with a primer, and iii) a set of projectiles in the form of shot, said cartridge comprising an intermediate piece separating the explosive charge and the shot according to the invention.
- a cartridge can be of all the usual sizes.
- the cartridge comprises an intermediate part as described, which is made of materials capable of degrading or decomposing at least 95% by weight in the natural environment in less than 25 days.
- the materials of the intermediate piece are chosen so that the sheath degrades in less than 15 days and that the tampon decomposes into fragments of natural material harmless for the environment, also in less than 15 days. The degradation will then be almost complete (98% or more) after 25 days.
- Such materials are for example cardboard for the production of the sheath and the cup (with intermediate rigid disc if used), and an agglomerate of cork or sawdust for the buffer. The fragments of cork or wood, non-toxic and little or not visually identifiable, will in turn deteriorate in a few months, by the action of both microorganisms and other living organisms, such as insects, rodents ... .
- the cartridge object of the invention is thus a cartridge with fill and cup, respectful of the environment, which can be used for any type of shooting with weapons with smooth barrel, with sporting goal or of leisure, in full nature without contravene regulations prohibiting cartridges fitted with skirt wadding in terms of synthesis.
- FIG. 1 is a perspective view of an intermediate piece according to the invention.
- FIG. 2 is a sectional view of this same part.
- FIG. 3 is an exploded view of the various components of an intermediate piece according to the invention.
- FIG. 4 is a sectional representation of a cartridge fitted with an intermediate piece according to the invention.
- EXAMPLE 1 Intermediate piece
- the intermediate piece 100 as shown in fig.1, 2 and 3 comprises a sheath 1 and a pad 2 to which is fixed a cup 3.
- the sheath 1, of cylindrical section consists of a cardboard tube comprising the front part 1 1 which will receive a dose of shot, and the rear part 12 in which the pad 2 is located.
- the tube can be made for example of cardboard with spiral winding, available from cardboard manufacturers in different diameters and in different weights.
- the grammage is such that the thickness of the cardboard is between 0.4 mm and 1 mm.
- the sleeve 1 also has a diameter determined by the size of the cartridge in which the intermediate piece is to be placed.
- Four notches 13 equidistant, parallel to the axis of the sleeve 1 are made in the front part of the sleeve over a length of 18 mm allowing it to be opened during shot to give shape to the sheaf.
- Cardboard is a material of choice to meet the targeted objectives. It is resistant while having a certain elasticity which prevents it from tearing during the thrust of the gases. It is also hydrophilic, at least when it has not been subjected to particular treatments, so that it absorbs the ambient humidity of any origin: puddles, showers, fog, morning dew. It is therefore quickly digested by microorganisms growing on the cellulose of natural sites.
- the cardboard sheath is thus 100% biodegradable and it disappears completely in about three weeks after firing, or even less if the conditions are favorable, when it is left in a meadow or in a wood.
- the pad 2 is presented as a solid cylinder occupying the rear part 12 of the sleeve 1.
- the rear face 22 of the pad 2 is flush with the end of the sleeve 1, that is to say that the rear face 22 of the pad 2 and l end of the sheath 1 are in the same plane, orthogonal to the axis of the sheath 1.
- Its diameter is identical to that of the sheath 1, so that it is maintained by the friction forces at the time of its introduction by pressure in the sleeve 1.
- its diameter is 17.4 mm, like the internal diameter of the sleeve for gauge 12, and its height is chosen between 10 mm and 15 mm (adjusted according to the load of sinkers) .
- Buffer 2 is composed of crushed cork grains (the grain size being between 0.5 mm and 2 mm) amalgamated using a thermoplastic resin, added at a rate of 0.5% to 0.8% by mass.
- the use of cork is advantageous because it plays its role of damper perfectly. It is also completely natural and without toxicity for fauna and flora.
- the biodegradable binder is digested by microorganisms in a few days, releasing cork fragments which disperse without damage in the environment, to be used and / or gradually degraded by living organisms, as any woody debris would be.
- a 0.5 mm thick cardboard washer was stamped to obtain a cup 3 whose bottom 32 has a diameter identical to that of the pad 2 (17.4 mm in the present embodiment) with a circular flange 31 3 mm.
- the outer face of the bottom 32 has been glued using cellulose adhesive and fixed against the pad 2 at the end of the intermediate piece.
- a rigid disc (not shown) with a diameter identical to that of the sleeve 1, produced in the same carton can be previously glued to the pad 2.
- the cup 3 is quickly digested by microorganisms from natural sites, as is the rigid disc. It is thus 100% biodegradable and disappears completely in a few weeks after firing.
- the cartridge 200 shown in Figure 4 includes an intermediate piece 100 as described above.
- the cartridge 200 is formed from the cylindrical sleeve 10, made of plastic of a type known per se. Its rear part is mounted in the base 40 made of metal, for example brass.
- the cartridge 200 contains powder constituting the explosive charge 20 which is in contact with the primer 42.
- the shot 30 is housed in the front part 11 of the intermediate piece 100, so that it is separated from the explosive charge 20.
- the explosive charge is confined in its compartment by means of the cup 3, the collar 31 of which provides sealing.
- the cartridge case can be transparent, or at least translucent, so as to reveal the sheath that it contains, and especially the information printed on it.
- the cartridge case can be transparent, or at least translucent, so as to reveal the sheath that it contains, and especially the information printed on it.
- the information intended for the users such as the caliber, the length of the sleeve or the manufacturer's mark.
- Printing on cardboard is easy and will remain visible for a long time, while the marking commonly made on the sleeve tends to fade, which can be the cause of accidents. Such marking is likely to improve the safety of practitioners, and without going so far, it will be appreciated by users for its practicality.
- the intermediate piece according to example 1 was tested with 12-gauge cartridges. A hundred shots were taken on a target and were compared with shots shot under the same conditions with cartridges fitted with pattern skirt fillers. conventional. The results obtained are very satisfactory. There was no loss of pressure during the firing, nor disturbances in the sheaf of pellets. The performance in terms of impact grouping is excellent, indicating a regular structural conformation of the cartridge and of the intermediate part. Comparatively, the ballistic qualities are better than those obtained with plastic skirt fillers.
